Gin Tama ‘Season Finale’ Review

Sakata-Gintoki-Manager

In Gin Tama, viewers are treated with historical inaccurate documentation of Edo. The samurai and their bushido disintegrated when Admiral Perry invaded Japan thus, opening the doors to modernization. Gin Tama shows a twisted view of foreign occupation that resists the actual events that transpired during when the US fleet made contact in Edo. The Amanto, an intergalactic race of aliens, occupied all of Japan, seizing power from the Shogunate and made the bakufu their personal lap dogs.

I think you already know how things work in Gin Tama. After watching Season 5 , I’ve come to appreciate the betrayal that Gin Tama wants to instill to its audience. If you’re new to the series, Gin Tama throws in different storyline exploits unique to shounen-style anime. This show is so entertaining and misguided that newcomers will come to embrace and love every major character of the Sunrise-produced series. After leaving national consciousness in March 2010, Gin Tama made a not-so-surprising return in April 2011, where mayhem inside the Yorozuya household continued while retaining the same level of humor that disrespects the fine line of legal novelties.

After watching 50 (202-252) episodes from Season 5, Gin Tama left another farewell note to audiences. Episode 252 was so random, and even disgusting. Puking is something you’ll love in Gin Tama, especially during the Yorozuya Barbers Arc. Episode 252 shows the disoriented cast of Gin Tama apologizing to their audience after a tumultuous streak of censorship occurred in past episodes. The apology made a lot of sense.

Episode 232 contained defamatory depiction of individuals and if you’re not really a huge fan of Japanese culture and politics, then you might find that the apparent cancellation of this episode too be bit estranged.

This is why Gin Tama stands out from the rest of the competition! The humor never stops. The animated trolling reaches astronomical levels. The fight scenes will leave you motionless. The characters are important. The protagonist, Gintoki Sakata, is a skillful swordsman who has a long streak of maintaining a lovable personality and street smarts that gifted him the ability to evade Otose’s monthly rent slip.

What Happened in Season 5 of Gin Tama
Let’s see. Season 5 opened with a Timeskip Arc, followed by the Glasses Arc that shows Ayame Sarutobi struggling to perform assassination jobs due to a malfunctioning eyeglasses Gintoki bought her, and there’s the Kabukicho Four Devas Arc that chronicles the history between Otose and Doromizu Jirochou. The latter shows Gintoki attracting the samurai, Pirako Chin, as she searches someone to help stir conflict between the Four Devas of the sin-drenched district of Kabuki and make her father, Doromizu Jirochou, the primary leader of Kabukicho.

Gintoki-and-Otose

The impressive showdown between Jirochou and Gintoki is a memorable tribute to Gintoki’s promise to Otose to protect her at all costs. Jirochou, a close friend of Otose and her deceased husband Terada Tatsugorou, managed to stab the former, knocking her out temporarily. The graveyard clash of swords between Gintoki and Jirochou is one for the ages. Gintoki’s rampage in Episode 211 blinded him for a short moment, falling prey to the more collected and experienced Jirochou. A touching and action-packed arc that ended with Jirochou re-uniting with her daughter, Pirako Chin.

What Else is On The Menu?
If you’re not familiar with B’z, then the Jugem Arc is not for you. Although you will experience shocks of involuntary laughter when you see Isaac Schneider and Balmung Fezalion get their groove on. The Jugem Arc introduces a new member to the expanding list of Gin Tama characters namely:

Jugem-Jugem Shit-Tossing The Life Of Shin-chan’s Two-Day-Old Underwear Balmung Fezalion Isaac Schneider 1/3True Love 2/3 Hangnail Anxiety Betrayal Knows My Name Or Does It Really Ignore Calls Squid Dogfish Halibut Trout-Cod Dogfish This Is a Different Dogfish,I’m Talking About The Dogfish Shark Kaluga Angler Ray Yuuteimiyaoukimukou Pepepepepepepepepepepepe All’s Well That Ends Well Runny Diarrhea.

The Renho Arc unravels the mystery behind the disappearance of Katsura’s pet-duck Amanto Elizabeth, plus Tatsuma Sakamoto re-surfaced to help his fellow Joi comrade stop an invasion led by Dark Vader. This arc is an intergalactic showdown filled with Star Wars and Gundam references, which I thought was very funny. The crotch beam? Priceless!

Finally, the Baragaki Arc explores the blood-stained history of Shinsengumi’s Demonic Vice-Commander, Hijikata Toushirou. Tetsunosuke Sasaki, a disgrace to the elite Sasaki family, is promoted as Hijikata’s new assistant. Ramming heads with Gintoki in a dissing rap battle, Tetus loses to keep pace with the samurai’s eccentric behavior. The Baragaki Arc also introduced Sasaki Isaburo, Mimawarigumi’s commander and half-brother to Tetsu; and Iwai Nobume, vice-commander and assassin of the white-clad special force.

What Happens Next?
Gin Tama will return. The apologetic voice of Kagura in the dying seconds of Episode 252 hints that Gin Tama will resume. Season 5 of Gintama is sprinkled with controversy, random humor, clean & impressive sword fights, drama, and sci-fi. Gin Tama exploits these elements together to form a very entertaining and memorable show of samurais fighting aliens, gorilla stalkers, Anpan factory jokes, sadism, partial nudity, and concepts you won’t normally find in a shounen title.
