What’s up guys! It is I, Dirv back again for another figure review.  This time let’s take a look at arguably the most anticipated Marvel Select release for this year:

The Marvel Select Venom Figure!!!

After having done an Ultimate version and an Anti-Venom figure in the past, Diamond Select Toys have finally given us our favorite symbiotic anti-hero his own Select figure.

Using the likeness of Eddie Brock during the Madness story arc, this figure comes with a ton of accessories including 3 sets of inter-changeable heads and hands — and a back-pack like accessory that also comes with articulated arms and heads.

Here is my hands-on review of the figure:

A piece of advice: As much as I like this Marvel Select Venom, the only real big flaw I found with it is that DST did not invest that well in the quality department of this action figure. Paint smudges are prevalent from almost every stock I saw when I picked-this guy up. So be very careful in inspecting this figure — especially if you’re the “OC” type.

I’ve been collecting action figures for over a year now and after watching numerous toy reviews, I thought of doing my own reviews of action figures.

To get things started — and to finally shed my FG “virginity” — here is my review of a figure that has been received well by most collectors.

I give to you the: Play Arts Kai Dark Knight Trilogy Bane Figure

Standing at over 9 1/2″ tall, the PAK TDKT Bane is one big yet very detailed figure. Mostly made-out of PVC — and a little bit of rubber — this Bane figure really captures Tom Hardy’s likeness during the infamous sewer fight scene during the Dark Knight Rises movie. Piece of advice: Play Arts Kai has this bad habit of not pursuing excellence in terms of their quality control — yes, their QC sucks to be honest — and that issue has become a major argument whenever a new figure from the line gets previewed or released. DC Collectibles lineup for 2013 looks good, as they are bringing in more stuff based on their comic book and video game properties. Now let’s take a look at they have in store for us for February 2013. First up is a statue based on Frank Miller‘s classic – The Dark Knight Returns. Kotobukiya is also coming up with their own ARTFX statue which features Bats beating up The Joker (see here). But we  must admit that DC collectibles indeed captured one of the best moments of TDKR — Batman riding that big black horse!

Lastly, here’s one for the DC Women lovers out there! In the past we had great lines like Cover Girls (the ones based on Adam Hughes art are the best by the way) and Women of the DC Universe. And now DC is doing something different with their new line — Bombshells, which features various DC women modeled after iconic 1940s pin-up artwork! They have only unveiled Supergirl and Wonder Woman but hope we get some more with the first wave.

Deep inside every fan would want something that would make them remember their favorite movie, favorite comic book and character. It may be posters, toys, action figures, simple trinkets or other collectibles that we would want to include in our collection but we’re pretty sure that one of our most sought after is to have a statue.

In the geek world, two companies come to mind when we talk about statues — Kotobukiya and Sideshow Collectibles. This BOBA FETT MYTHOS statue by Sideshow Collectibles just show how bad-ass Boba is, he really looks like he’s battle ready and one look you’ll know why he’s one of the most feared bounty hunters in the galaxy! First established in 2001, GreatToysOnline.com has been practically the country’s biggest independent toys and collectibles chain, as well as the biggest importer of Japanese collectibles. My friends, who are big mecha and Sentai/Kamen Rider fans, usually hang out at the GT Greenhills branch on weekends, and while the supply of items there is definitely more than adequate, we usually talk about how it would be great if there were more space to move around inside the store. There’s a tall line of shelves in the middle of the store, leaving two lanes for people to pass through…and keeping both lanes two-way becomes quite a challenge when the place starts getting packed with people (which, not surprisingly, happens a LOT – ahh, the advantages and disadvantages of having plenty of satisfied and loyal customers).

I first heard about the new store from the owner himself, Mr Malvin Lim. My friends and I passed by the GT Greenhills branch a few months ago, and we decided to take a look at some of the stuff they were selling. So there we were, talking and laughing among ourselves. All of a sudden, as if we were in a campy soap commercial, he kind of magically appeared right behind us, taking us completely by surprise and causing me to drop (on the counter and not on the floor, thankfully) the S.H.Figuarts GokaiSilver I was currently checking out.

“Mag-o-open kami ng bagong branch! D’yan lang sa Annapolis, short walk lang mula dito.” he said, with his million-pesos-worth-of-sentai-robots smile.

Clutching my heart and with one eye twitching, I turned around and did my best to smile, trying to hide my shock. “Talaga po sir? Gaano kalaki yung bagong branch?”

“Mga anim na ganito*,” he replied.

“Talaga? Anim na ganito? Hehehehehe…”

Boy, he wasn’t kidding.

The aforementioned new branch, the 250-sq m GreatToysOnline.com Annapolis Greenhills branch, was formally opened last September 20, 2012. Sir Malvin invited quite a few members of the blogging and toy collecting communities to check out the new store.

There were a lot of awesome things on display, most of which I’d never even seen before.

The most attention-grabbing items of the evening, though, were definitely these – animation cells from Voltes V and Daimos, older than you (maybe) or me (definitely)!

Kotobukiya will be releasing another bishoujo figure from Namco’s Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in the form of JayCee (who also happens to be Julia Chang).

Standing slightly over 8 inches tall (1/7 scale) on a special display base, Jaycee was sculpted by Busujimax (Takaboku Busujima) with special attention to her intricate costume and hair. HOLY HOT TOYS BATMAN!! Just in time for the upcoming movie THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, we have some really good news! Hot Toys has announced their new 1:6 scale DX series of figures that include HEATH LEDGER JOKER 2.0, The Dark Knight Rises – BATMAN / BRUCE WAYNE and those huge Bat-vehicles – BATPOD and THE BAT.

Like most Hot Toys figures it has interchangeable hands and heads, and has over 35 points of articulation. But the best part of these upcoming figures is the incredible amount of detail put into them. They look soooooooo freakingly realistic, just looking at the Joker creeps me out and that Batman just looks badass!

As of now, only the HEATH LEDGER JOKER has a price tag on it (US $274.99) — which you can pre-order here, and we’re still awaiting word for the TDKR figures. TOYCON 2012 was rocked by the presence of two of the Philippines’ premier model kit enthusiast clubs IPMS (International Plastic Modeler’s Society) Philippines and Mechapinoy. The clubs went on a joint operation showcasing the best of the best scale models from the country’s best modelers. A number of the kits displayed were winning pieces from National and in-house competitions from both clubs.

The exhibit was set up inside the gallery section of the TOYCON, with the clubs providing 4 huge display cases full of model kits across various genre. Displays include scale model aircraft, armor, ships and infantry from the IPMS side. Mechapinoy on the other hand showcased mecha kits from various mecha series such as GUndam (most notably), Macross, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tarnsformers and many more.

The aim of the exhibit is to raise public awareness about the perks of getting into the scale model building hobby. A lot of people are daunted on getting started but friendly club members were there on location to answer questions regarding the hobby.
