First established in 2001, GreatToysOnline.com has been practically the country’s biggest independent toys and collectibles chain, as well as the biggest importer of Japanese collectibles. My friends, who are big mecha and Sentai/Kamen Rider fans, usually hang out at the GT Greenhills branch on weekends, and while the supply of items there is definitely more than adequate, we usually talk about how it would be great if there were more space to move around inside the store. There’s a tall line of shelves in the middle of the store, leaving two lanes for people to pass through…and keeping both lanes two-way becomes quite a challenge when the place starts getting packed with people (which, not surprisingly, happens a LOT – ahh, the advantages and disadvantages of having plenty of satisfied and loyal customers).

I first heard about the new store from the owner himself, Mr Malvin Lim. My friends and I passed by the GT Greenhills branch a few months ago, and we decided to take a look at some of the stuff they were selling. So there we were, talking and laughing among ourselves. All of a sudden, as if we were in a campy soap commercial, he kind of magically appeared right behind us, taking us completely by surprise and causing me to drop (on the counter and not on the floor, thankfully) the S.H.Figuarts GokaiSilver I was currently checking out.

“Mag-o-open kami ng bagong branch! D’yan lang sa Annapolis, short walk lang mula dito.” he said, with his million-pesos-worth-of-sentai-robots smile.

Clutching my heart and with one eye twitching, I turned around and did my best to smile, trying to hide my shock. “Talaga po sir? Gaano kalaki yung bagong branch?”

“Mga anim na ganito*,” he replied.

“Talaga? Anim na ganito? Hehehehehe…”

Boy, he wasn’t kidding.

The aforementioned new branch, the 250-sq m GreatToysOnline.com Annapolis Greenhills branch, was formally opened last September 20, 2012. Sir Malvin invited quite a few members of the blogging and toy collecting communities to check out the new store.

There were a lot of awesome things on display, most of which I’d never even seen before.

The most attention-grabbing items of the evening, though, were definitely these – animation cells from Voltes V and Daimos, older than you (maybe) or me (definitely)!

TOYCON 2012 was rocked by the presence of two of the Philippines’ premier model kit enthusiast clubs IPMS (International Plastic Modeler’s Society) Philippines and Mechapinoy. The clubs went on a joint operation showcasing the best of the best scale models from the country’s best modelers. A number of the kits displayed were winning pieces from National and in-house competitions from both clubs.

The exhibit was set up inside the gallery section of the TOYCON, with the clubs providing 4 huge display cases full of model kits across various genre. Displays include scale model aircraft, armor, ships and infantry from the IPMS side. Mechapinoy on the other hand showcased mecha kits from various mecha series such as GUndam (most notably), Macross, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tarnsformers and many more.

The aim of the exhibit is to raise public awareness about the perks of getting into the scale model building hobby. A lot of people are daunted on getting started but friendly club members were there on location to answer questions regarding the hobby.

Leading into New York Toy Fair, DC Direct unveiled two new collectible statues based on character art from the recently announced BEFORE WATCHMEN, a series of all-new stories that expand on the universe of best-selling graphic novel, WATCHMEN. Prototypes for Rorschach and Comedian statues will be unveiled at the show, kicking off the new BEFORE WATCHMEN product line that will go on sale later this year, exclusively from DC Direct.

The show’s title takes off from the more festive Mexican version of our own Todos Los Santos (which is mistranslated in the vernacular as Araw ng mga Patay or as Undas).

Their persistence in being represented in the arts or in every platform of representation in our visual culture seem symptomatic of our fascination for and for our grasping for our fleeting mortality, hence being more than symbols of death, skulls also signify the preciousness of life that we all have to hold on to as dear and celebrate it for the fullness achieved in living it. Of this existentialist exercise of pondering upon the calcic armature that supports the drapery of flesh and tissue which has been made as a yearly ritual/feast , does it ere yonder reveal our precarious hold on our mortality? We celebrate, we gorge on the deluge of tenuous emotions of sorrow and merriment, but tis the vanity or is it not we just prolong the eventuality of our inescapable end. The themes we like to portray in the pictures we like to hang on our walls seem to bespeak of such. We ponder and wonder but it’s both a miracle and an abomination. Alas, these are portraits of our very frail shells. We fill them up instead with the spirit of infinite jest. A hundred cast resin skulls lined up on a shelf each customized by various artists as diverse as their age, cosmological outlook and style flesh out this philosophical point aside from the numerous drawings, paintings, prints and other sculptural works to complement the aforementioned custom skulls.

Kotobukiya released several new images featuring the upcoming Marvel Thor Classic Avengers Fine Art Statue.

The mighty Thor is back and better than ever! In 1962 comic book mastermind Stan Lee set out to create a new superhero, one who was incredibly powerful. He found such a character in Norse mythology, the god of thunder. A true champion of good, he has fought beside many other Marvel Comics superheroes throughout the years, including several incarnations of the Avengers. It’s in that spirit that he appears as the first in an all-new fine art statue series: Thor Classic Avengers! Coinciding with the upcoming Avengers film in 2012, this series celebrates the classic versions of some of Marvel’s greatest heroes, starting with the Asgardian warrior who just this year received his own feature film.

Based on classic art by Jack Kirby, Thor stands as a literal god upon the field of battle. Huge and muscular, the god of thunder poses triumphantly with his magical hammer Mjolnir held high above his head as though daring the enemies of Asgard to challenge him. The classic look is authentic from the colorful costume (sleeveless black belted tunic with silver discs, blue pants, yellow wrapped high boots, and red cape) to his hair and accessories (red and black wristbands and silver winged helmet). Thor has an incredibly detailed sculpt that captures every bulging muscle, crease and fold of his costume, and the flowing strength of his cape and long blonde hair. Particularly well done are the powerful but battle worn Mjolnir with its chips, cracks, and iconic inscription and the deity’s face focused fiercely on the battle at hand.

Sculpted by Erick Sosa, Thor dominates the fine art statue series at nearly 13 ½ inches tall. The blast from the past stands on a crushed rock terrain base that will match those on the other upcoming Classic Avengers: Captain America and Iron Man! Start building your classic Marvel team with Thor just in time for the film.
