Here’s the newest photo of Anthony Mackie as the Falcon (thanks to our friends at Newsarama.com) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier - in cinemas April 4, 2014 – and it really looks like he’s going to be based on the Ultimate version of the high-flying African hero. The lack of wings most likely means that he’ll have them post-CGI. The REAL question here is whether or not he’ll have his trusty pal Redwing flying around with him.

In other news, ComicBookMovie.com reports that the newest issue of EW features Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover, and also (somewhat) confirms the recent rumor that mutant superheroes Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will be added to The Avengers 2‘s roster. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige remains tight-lipped on the topic, though, stating that he is “[neither] confirming [nor] denying. The draft could change six months from now.” Honestly, at this point we’d really rather get Ant-Man and Wasp, but the possibility of a “Cap’s Kooky Quartet” sequence with Pietro and Wanda joining Hawkeye and Captain America on perhaps a stealth/reconnaissance mission excites us, too!

Here’s a look at the Iron Man 3-themed EW cover:

How do you feel about the Falcon in Cap 2? Would you rather see other Avengers such as Black Panther or Ms Marvel in the sequel? Drop us a line in the Comments section – it’s absolutely free, and we won’t bite! (Most of the time, anyway!)

Here are our four burning questions regarding the new trailer for PACIFIC RIM from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Stars Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba.

Warner Bros. Pictures has shared the new trailer for Pacific Rim which is directed by Guillermo Del Torro. I wanted to ask a couple of questions pertaining to this new questions and maybe get you guys to solve the riddle.

1. Who are the new Jaegers?

We’re all familiar with the first batch like Cherno Alpha, Striker Eureka and the jaeger that Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi pilots which was Gypsy Danger. So who are these new guys? It looks like the film still has more secrets that it doesn’t plan on revealing until July 11.

2. What is Ron Perlman’s role?

If you ask me, the man who played Hellboy could be the boss of the whole operation. Actually this is the first time we’ve seen him in any of the trailers. Originally I was assuming that Idris Elba was just a pilot but it looks like he got bumped to a commander or something.

3. Flying Kaijus

So we’re seeing flying kaijus now which makes me wonder what are the other ‘specialized’ kaijus we might be seeing here in this epic movie. Also, it’s interesting to note that this might just be a throwback to an old Godzilla foe called Rodan.

4. Who are they fighting in Space?

So not only is Pacific Rim about giant robots fighting giant monsters, it looks like the fight might be brought to outer space as we can see in this. But who are they dealing with? What kind of Kaiju has the capability to fly off to space, let alone carry a giant mech along with it. Sounds interesting.

If anyone remembers G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and it’s MANY problems that mostly include bad acting, the lack of star power and Joseph Gordon Levitz trying to be an evil bad-ass than G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a fitting title for a sequel as it tries to retaliate (HA HA!) for the failures of its predecessor. Most of the actors from the previous film are gone except for Channing Tatum and whoever plays as the good and bad ninjas while current WWE Champion Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Die Hard veteran Bruce Willis are added for more appeal. You can easily watch this without knowing anything about G.I. Joe so it feels more like a reboot than a sequel and that’s all fine and dandy. With all the problems of the previous film seemingly solved what could possibly go wrong? The short answer is A LOT OF THINGS. The long answer is the rest of this review.

Minor spoilers below:

I will admit that looking for ANYTHING remotely complex or deep in a summer blockbuster is like ordering a Bacon Cheeseburger in a vegetarian restaurant and in my defense I wasn’t looking for any of that. I just wanted some ninjas, a straight forward plot and more ninjas. Obviously no one is going to watch this movie for a coherent plot we are here for the action which is good, because most of the action is pretty kick-ass. The opening raid where all the Joes get a chance to shine is nice and there is also an epic fight scene with hundreds of bad ninjas versus two good ninjas, but the true highlight of the film is the battle between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. I won’t spoil it, but I will say that it’s full of awesome and win. There are also plenty of crazy weapons which are always a plus in my book; you’ll see dragonfly bombs and guns that shoot homing bullets which are pretty cool. Plus SHURIKENS!

I also enjoy how the movie embraces the campy nature of its source material; the villains in particular ARE A RIOT. They’re cheesy and over the top and they make it seem fun to be on the dark side. At one point you find out that they don’t pay taxes, simply because they are EVIL! No questions asked. The good guys on the other hand are BORE. The Rock and Willis are fine, but their buddies suck the fun out of the movie. One of them is a bland dude (D.J. Cotrona) who does parqour like once and never does it again, while the other is a chick (Adrianne Palicki) who manages to be both a tech-geek and an army brat with daddy issues which is two clichés in one, three if you count the fact that she’s hot. Both “characters” if you can call them that, could have been replaced by a bouncer and a hooker respectively and no one would notice the difference, they are a waste of space and add NOTHING to the story. Would it have killed the writers to give them ANY kind of personality no matter how simple? They’re so thin and empty that they make WWE superstars look three dimensional in comparison.

The film takes a turn for the worse during the middle, because it slows down considerably to the point that it forces me to realize how dumb the movie really is and nitpick it to death! There are plot-holes that involve characters in point A immediately being in point C without explaining whatever happened in point B because LOGIC IS FOR NERDS! And then there are just really stupid moments like how the aforementioned bland girl reveals her baggage with her dad in one of the stupidest scenes I have ever seen! However it’s not as stupid as a certain character switching alliances because he—I WISH I WERE KIDDING—thinks really hard about a flashback. Also whoever decided to get RZA as the blind master needs to have their head examined then RIPPED OFF.

Despite my completely accurate musings, the movie is technically fine if you’re just looking to kill 2 hours and want to have some thoughtless entertainment. I don’t recommend it, but knowing that most of you don’t pick apart movies like I do, you’ll probably enjoy the explosions and the ninjas.

Special thanks to Solar Entertainment for the IMAX experience!

On paper, Jack the Giant Slayer has all the elements for a solid Hollywood blockbuster. It’s an adaptation of a well-known fairy tale everyone loves, the cast features young up-and-comers such as Nicholas Hault and Eleanor Tomlinson; and veteran actors, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane and Ewan McGregor. It’s also directed by fan favourite director, Bryan Singer, of X-Men and House MD fame. Simply put, it SHOULD be entertaining. So why is it a giant disappointment instead?

Because it’s dull! It’s not good enough to like or bad enough to be campy. It’s bland and lifeless which is sad because based on the concept alone, Jack the Giant Cash Cow should be one hell of a good time. Instead, it’s a depressing watch because of all the wasted potential.

Here come the spoilers.

Let’s give credit where credit is due, the effects aren’t bad and the plot has promise. There’s even a cool introduction for the beans (secret origin style), and yet it still feels like a fairy tale– that’s what the movie obviously wants to go for. It wants to be cheesy, and that’s fine. Fairy tales are great because of how imaginative they can be, and the movie gets points for making an interesting mythology about beans of all things.

The same, however, can’t be said for the characters. I can understand them being one-dimensional or cheesy. Hell, I would have loved it if they cheesed and hammed it up to a deliciously classic telling, but that wasn’t the case. The characters in the film were, at most, robotic. No, they weren’t actual robots, which would have made this movie better actually. Robots vs Giants sounds like a pretty sweet movie to me. The characters simply have no personality. You know a movie’s bad when the beans are more interesting than the characters.

You don’t know Jack….

Jack is the best example of this; he’s the good guy because the film needs a protagonist, not because he was inspired by the tale of King Erik or because he was raised by hard working farmers. He’s good because the movie requires him to be good. He also has no internal struggle which is just awful. At one point his uncle asks him when the fuck he’s gonna grow up because he sold a horse for magic beans, but this jab was ignored by Jack and is never mentioned again. Why should I root for Jack?! I can’t answer that and neither can the damn movie. His love interest doesn’t fare any better. Isabelle is supposedly a rebellious princess, but she’s still a damsel in distress. She nearly gets raped by muggers at the start of the film, and is later taken hostage by the giants. The only difference is she gets herself into these situations! That would be okay if she was the one who saved herself, but I just called her a damsel in distress remember? Her dad’s knights save her from the muggers and Jack saves her from the giants. She doesn’t even TRY to defend herself from being raped! Way to stick it to daddy dearest, honey. She makes Bella Swan look tough. SERIOUSLY!

The other characters are even worse. Elmont is that one prick in every fantasy movie that HAS to hate the protagonist for no reason until said protagonist impresses him. Spoiler alert: HE GETS IMPRESSED and they become BFF’s! Lord Roderick, Isabelle’s evil fiancé, is a boring antagonist. His plan to take over the kingdom with an army of giants reeks of awesomeness, but he, himself, doesn’t. He has no motive aside from being evil which would be cool because I love overly dramatic bad guys, but he doesn’t even talk about how much he loves being evil. That’s just heart breaking. He’s like Jack, except he’s required to be bad. Isabelle’s dad is an overprotective king. Need I say more? Plus all the damn giants are practically the same. Even the one with TWO HEADS!

The king and I…

The script of the film is just horrendous. There’s no other word for it. The pacing is slow and then moves too fast near the end. We even get an antagonist switch near the end. GOOD GOD WHY?! It also relies on basic toilet humour, so expect plenty of burps, farts and booger picking here! There are also plenty of logic leaps. A giant can smell a knight hiding behind a tree, but can’t smell Jack behind him? Geezas. The script also suffers from lack of exposition and practically has no build up. At one point a giant pulls a slingshot out of his ass (No, not literally) and uses it as a weapon. We had NO IDEA he had it until he brought it out. Fuck! The movie also has the gall to expect you to care about its characters. Jack’s uncle has to sell his parent’s belongings and it makes Jack feel sad. Why does it make you sad, Jack? Does the memory of your kind parents make you a better person? OH WAIT! You never mention them! Later in the film some knight dies, but his name isn’t mentioned until he’s dead! He doesn’t even do anything significant, unless you count talking about cakes as important. What’s worse is everyone gets distraught about it; they even bury his body for God’s sake! He’s only in the film for like 20 minutes, and has about 6 lines and we’re supposed to feel bad? Who does the movie think he is? Uncle Ben?

The actors also don’t seem to give a damn except for Eleanor Tomlinson. She actually plays her role well with some good facial expressions and some fine acting, unlike lead actor, Nicky Hault. He has the same facial expression throughout the movie and his acting is just bland as his character. Stanley Tucci is worse; he’s horrid as the antagonist, Roderick. He doesn’t seem to embrace the cheesy nature of his character and gives a half assed performance because of it. Ian McShane and Ewan McGregor feel like they’re going through the motions here. At one point Ewan says I have a bad feeling about this, as if he were quoting Star Wars. Do you wish you were in Star Wars, Ewan? I wish I watched Star Wars instead of this mess.

We have a giant problem…

Even the directing has problems; there’s an awkward shot when Jack sells the horse to the monk, who rides away in an absolutely pointless slow motion scene. Plus the editing is rough; two scenes (one in the middle and one near the end) could have been cancelled, or at the least positioned in a more appropriate placement– and here I was excited for Singer’s return to the X-men franchise.

Don’t waste your time. Jack the Giant Slayer is simply awful. An interesting plot and some nice effects aren’t enough to save the film from an unmotivated cast, bland characters, awkward directing and a terrible script. Skip it and save some money.

Special Thanks to Warner Bros. for the invite!

Night Shyamalan" width="300" height="172" /> Father and son actors — Will Smith and Jaden Smith rejoins in a movie together with director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable) in Columbia Pictures’ new sci-fi movie “After Earth“.

This year, sci-fi movies looks to be a hot choice as we also have upcoming movies like Star Trek: Into Darkness and Tom Cruise‘s Oblivion. But this new film from the Smith’s and Shyamalan looks to be a serious contender. Will and Jaden Smith has collaborated together in ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’, which showcased Jaden’s talent as an actor when it comes to drama, and then with ‘Karate Kid’ that shows action and stunts. Will Smith’s career has already shown us that he can do sci-fi (I, Robot) and drama (Pursuit) as well. So the only factor here is director Shyamalan, who never really had a sci-fi project, but was always good when it comes to supernatural, a bit of horror and mystery theme, so this movie might actually be a hit or miss. But looking at pictures and posters, especially the trailer, you can see that it really looks good. Here’s a synopsis of the film –

“A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cyphe<var></var>r critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.”

At some point in the middle of Les Misérables’s two-hour-thirty-eight-minute run, Hugh Jackman truly sings.

As he takes the young Cosette with him, Jean Valjean (Jackman) breaks into song as his heart stirs anew. Here he is, holding the promise of a new beginning, not just for this child, but for him as well. He sings about the gift of life, and it is wonderful – a kind of quiet power that resonates with you, not because of its intensity or volume, but because of its sheer emotional weight. As Valjean looks outside his carriage window, it slowly, steadily, and definitely sinks in: suddenly, something has begun, and his life has indeed found its purpose.*

It is a known fact that the film, based on the musical adaptation of one of novelist Victor Hugo’s greatest works, revolves around Valjean; a man shackled to a past more restricting and soul-shattering than any iron cage could ever be. As he embarks on a journey of redemption – one which was not even clear to him, especially at the beginning – he unknowingly touches the lives of many people. While most of these lives end in the most tragic ways, peace eventually comes to all who deserve it, whether here or in the afterlife.

This is hardly the first time that Les Misérables made the jump from print to film reel; however, this is definitely the first time that the musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg has been brought to life on the silver screen. To do justice to the critically-acclaimed play, the film features an ensemble cast. While Jackman and Anne Hathaway (as Fantine) definitely lead with solid acting and majestic vocals, the inspired performances by Amanda Seyfried (as Cosette), Eddie Redmayne (Marius) and Samantha Barks (Eponine), as well as the regal yet menacing presence of Russell Crowe (Javert), all help to make the film much greater than the sum of its parts. Each significant character is given their time to shine with their own songs, my personal favorites being Barks’s heartbreaking rendition of On My Own and the lengthy and hilarious high-energy number of Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter (as the Thenardiers), Master of the House.

Just about every aspect of Les Misérables blends with one another harmoniously – the film in its entirety is extremely well-done. The whole film is a treat for the senses, as eye-popping visuals and beautiful orchestra music come together for an outstanding production truly worthy of praise. The filmmakers have taken impressive measures to produce a film of quality and substance, from the accurate recreation of 19th-century France to the subtle and not-so-subtle movements and gestures that illustrate the defining traits of each character. Les Misérables moves, angers, saddens, and empowers. It manipulates us, and we, willing pawns that we are, are all too ready to cry buckets for lives lost, cheer for the underdogs, or secretly and silently wish for the villains to receive their comeuppance. It is, indeed, an organic experience, and only the most heartless among the heartless will not feel anything after sitting through this film. There may be slow moments, but there are hardly ever any dull moments. In fact, some might argue that the overall pace may perhaps be a little fast. While I do understand the reasoning behind the decision to put more emphasis on some events compared to others, I actually would have wanted the stories of some of the secondary leads to be explored a bit further.

Nevertheless, the challenge in writing a review for Les Misérables lies not in the process of evaluating whether it’s a film worth viewing or not – that is a question that doesn’t even need to be asked anymore.

No, the real challenge is when it hits you that, suddenly, you’re out of ways to express just how much of a masterpiece it is.

Perhaps I could take lessons from Valjean.

VERDICT: 5/5

———————————————————————————————————————-

*The song in question, “Suddenly”, is a new one – it was specifically created for this film.

A big big “thank you!” goes out to our friends from SM Cinemas and Solar-UIP for the special screening of Les Misérables. Be sure to Like the official Solar-UIP fanpage on Facebook!

Watch Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam kick kaiju ass in the first trailer for Warner Bros.’ “Pacific Rim” directed by Guillermo Del Torro.

Here’s the synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Set 60 years before The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey follows the titular Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), as he is recruited by the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by the legendary Dwarf warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). With little more than a map they can’t completely read and Thorin’s consuming drive to reclaim his homeland and legacy, Bilbo is swept up in an epic journey through the treacherous and wondrous Wild on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf city of Erebor, which was long ago raided and conquered by the dragon Smaug.

Since setting off on his odyssey to make The Lord of the Rings films, The Hobbit has never been far from Jackson’s mind. When the skies cleared for Jackson and his collaborators to begin the adaptation process, they initially decided to divide the story up into two films. Only in the thick of production, when an early cut of the first film had been assembled, did the true scope of the project reveal itself, and “two became three.”

Jackson says he drew on both Tolkien’s intricate and layered 1937 novel and an additional treasure trove of material the revered English writer, professor and philologist developed in the decades after The Hobbit was first published. “At the end of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien included 125 pages of appendices which provide more backstory to the history of Middle-earth. This included describing some of the politics and events that occur during the years pertaining to The Hobbit,” he explains. “This new material was more serious, darker in tone, and more in line with The Lord of the Rings.”

So, Jackson and his collaborators on the screenplay—Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, his fellow Oscar-winning co-writers on The Lord of the Rings films, along with Guillermo del Toro—set about piecing the material together. “With these films, we wanted to take the charm and humor of The Hobbit and blend it with some of the back story and tone of the appendices,” Jackson notes. “I didn’t want these to feel like children’s films any more than The Lord of the Rings. We wanted to make the very best films we could, films we’d like to see.”

Working alongside Jackson throughout production were Boyens and Walsh, who adds that they found touchstones to Tolkien’s later imaginings within The Hobbit itself. “The Hobbit is much more playful than The Lord of the Rings,” Walsh notes. “We always saw it as a slightly more golden-lighted fairy tale, and it was written as that. But, by the time we get to the end, I think Tolkien pulls himself into the place where he would begin that epic journey of writing The Lord of the Rings. The nature of honor and leadership and power—those big themes that are quite prevalent in The Lord of the Rings—were sleeping and being awakened towards the end of The Hobbit.”

And then the long and ever-evolving journey to adapt the piece began. “It was quite easy, surprisingly easy, to fall back into this world,” comments Boyens, whom Jackson describes as “the world’s biggest Tolkien geek.” “It felt right, because we do dearly love these characters. I think it was fate that we made The Lord of the Rings first. I think The Hobbit films are better for it. This would be a different type of film without having gone through the experiences we did with the incredible cast we had on The Lord of the Rings.”

For Jackson, the process of dreaming and doing never ends. Once he and his team have wrapped this film, they will begin on the central film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and then on to the finale, The Hobbit: There and Back Again. But, the filmmaker says, even then, it’s never over, “because the day that we finish the movie, usually within a day or two of it premiering, suddenly the movie exists in a whole different form. People still write us who have seen The Lord of the Rings, kids who have just seen it for the first time. And that’s part of the joy of making films. You’re realizing that you’ve created something that is entertaining people and will hopefully entertain people for years to come after we’re all gone. It doesn’t end with the completion of the film, not really. The real satisfaction comes when the movie begins screening in cinemas – it leaves your hands and passes into the hands of those it was made for – the audience.”

A production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be released in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 13, 2012.

The second film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” will be released on December 13, 2013, to be followed by “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” on July 18, 2014.
