GEEK FACTS: Star-Lord of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was Co-Created By Filipino Artist

The trailer for the ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy‘ movie (watch here) is now out, and lots of geeks are very happy in what they saw. To be honest, the trailer was really good and would make a comic book or scifi fan very excited. Of course, there was that Pinoy-pride moment when we saw Fil-Am Dave Bautista aka Batista as Drax the Destroyer, but people rarely know that another Filipino deserves some recognition and spotlight.

One of the main characters in GotG played  by Chris Pratt is Peter Quill aka Star-Lord who is also the leader of the group. Star-Lord has been prominent in Marvel comics’ cosmic/space opera books ever since the crossover events Annihalation and Annihalation: Conquest (these are good reading starting points by the way). He first appeared on January 1976 in Marvel Preview #4, and was co-created by writer Steve Englehart and Filipino artist Steve Gan.

Gan is pure chinese, but is a naturalized Filipino who also worked on various Phillippine comics or komiks. Some of you may also don’t know that Gan is also the co-creator (together with Carlo J. Caparas) of the famous ‘Panday‘. Steve Gan is one of the many Filipino veterans and masters together with Alfredo Alcala, Nestor Redondo, Alex Niño and Tony DeZuniga who worked for US comic publishers. He has worked on various titles such as Savage TalesDracula LivesTarzanConan the Barbarian,The Savage Sword of Conan and various animation works like Tarzan, Biker Mice, Timon and Pumbaa, Savage Dragon and more. Let’s just hope that Steve Gan gets the proper credit and appreciation now that his character is hitting the big screens this year! Check out some of his masterpieces below:
