Happy Birthday Freddie Mercury- My Top 5 Queen Songs

The Fanboy will be celebrating the birthday of Freddie Mercury whose real name was Farrokh Bulsara with a look at the pop culture impact of the legendary “Queen” frontman.

Mercury was born in September 5 and died in November 24, 1991 due to complications brought about by AIDS.

Now there’ll probably be a million different blogs relating to the guy but what the hey, this is my column anyway and the gay or not, he was effin’ talented.

So here’s my top 5 Queen Songs (not particularly favorites mind you).

1. Fat Bottomed Girls

I mean c’mon. Who wouldn’t like Fat Bottomed Girls right? The title alone should already deserve a spot in any list.

Anyway, the song was a hit through and through which spawned it’s own MV.

The song was later used in the TV series “Glee” I think as part of their Valentines Day episode…

2. Crazy Little Thing Called Love

For the guys there who would like to croon their way into the hearts of the fair maidens, a good and simple song to pick is Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Its easy to sing and win in karaoke competitions as well as there are only a few lines to memorize. When you catch yourself wearing a leather jacket, you might want to sing this song as well. This’ll probably give you 60 to 70 percent more “pogi points”.

Here’s the video. You might pick up a few moves from this guy.

3. We Will Rock You

We will rock you has been used for a lot of things. I’ve heard dozens of derivatives of the song played on TV, Radio, even during concerts by other artists.

It’s got a good beat and very memorable. I’m sure everybody has a memorable experience or two with this song.

I suddenly remembered this great commercial for Pepsi…

4. Love of my Life

While we’re stuck with the notion that Freddie Mercury was openly gay (which was true) there were still some shreds of manliness in him. Such as when he wrote this song for the album “Night at the Opera” in 1975. He wrote the song as a tribute to the end of his relationship with long-time girlfriend Mary Austen.

I’m going to own up to really being a big fan of this song. This has “mush” written all over it but at the same time, there still some depth when you listen to it. Plus, its easy to play this on the piano, which is another good thing.

1. Don’t Stop Me Now

I only found this song cool during my college years so, its still fairly new as far as I’m concerned. Top Gear has nominated this song as the “Best Driving Song”.

Katy Perry constantly performs this song when on tour. Mrs. Russel Brand even went out in a Freddie Mercury costume last Halloween…

Oh and Google‘s Google Doodle decided to celebrate Freddie’s 65th birthday by producing an animated MV for this song…

Here’s the equally entertaining official video for the song.

Anyway, Freddie Mercury and Queen’s influence has been subtle yet powerful. There are a lot of bands and singers that would not be this talented and this inspired without having listened to Queen when they were younger.

Going back to Freddie, he’s already made an appearance in a Japanese manga and anime series “Cromartie High School“.

And mind you there are several statues that have been built in honor of this fantastic showman.

Overall, the guy is a genius and definitely a legend and he will always be alive as long as we listen and break into a Queen song once in awhile.

Long Live Freddie Mercury!
