Love can either get you so high that it feels like you’re flying or it can hurt you so bad that it feels like a giant mutant crocodile is repeatedly slamming you to the ground. As funny as that sounds, this is actually true. Now you have an idea on what goes on in Love Story.

The story revolves around a superhero who though being able to best the largest monsters, can still be vulnerable to heartbreaks. As the once famous song said “Even heroes have the right to bleed.”11041365_10153084388834035_1132443824_n

The plot is something that you’ve probably seen before. Boy and girl are happy. Girls leaves boy. Boy goes through a mourning period. Boy founds someone else. Boy and new girl lives happily ever after. Love Story adds its own life to the story through how it is told. The first thing that I liked about this comic book is how clearly it tells the story without having to using words. No narrations or dialogue. Well they talked in symbols (and a cupcake) but they don’t count since they didn’t use written words. Now since there are no dialogues, it was completely up to the illustrations of Rommel to continually move the progress of the story.

At first I thought that Love Story would feature a serious story about adults being in love and maybe there might be some bloodshed. I got that idea when I saw the cover which showed a strawberry filled cupcake that has a knife sticking through it. Well at least I got the love part right. I must say that Rommel‘s illustration looks quite good. His art gives you the feel that you are reading a children’s story book. Even though it looks quite simple, it was still detailed enough to make it appear livelier. It was quite enjoyable and a good change in the reading scenery. The characters were drawn in a way that made them look like kids in adult’s clothes which make it look more light hearted. Another thing that I liked about Love Story is that the illustrations are embossed on the paper. Try tracing the drawings as you read the story.

Though at first glance it looks like a simple book, it might even pass as a children’s book, but at a closer inspection it tells of love lost and then new love found. The contrast between the light hearted art and the underlying emotions mixing together creates an enjoyable reading experience that is the Love Story.
