Comic book titles are usually catchy, remarkable or has a lot of impact. Being used to this, I was taken by surprise when I found out about a comic book titled Ugh. Originating from the imagination of Hulyen, Ugh is a local comic book that has its own kind of sense of humor.

The comic book covers different situations that in general has a theme of weirdness. Some could last a couple of pages while some are resolved in a single page. There are also relatable awkward situations that still plays differently in Ugh #1. Hulyen generally uses wit to produce a unique kind of comedy from her work. Though there are many characters, the most prominent character is hipster Hulyen. Most of her story revolves around her identity as a hipster doing well… hipster things. Some stories also has a touch of the usual social trends that exists today such as hashtags and tinder.

The art that is present here is unlike the usual comics. Characters are drawn in a way that might seem they are sick or very stressed. It can even be called creepy. Still the illustrations are clean without any shading which is how humor comics are usually drawn. Surprisingly, her style of drawing fits perfectly with her characters and the kind of humor that goes throughout the comic book.  The dialogue has wit to it and it is also easy to read. The cover also perfectly captures the essence of its title along with the weirdness of what you’ll see inside.

It does make you ask for more but it still is a little short. Hopefully the next issue will have much more that what the first has to offer. After reading through it you’ll have a feeling of what did I just read but it’s of a good kind .
