Captures the cartoon really well; fun and energetic artwork

Doesn't really introduce new fans to what the cartoon's about

Steven Universe Vol. 1, by Jeremy Sorese and Coleman Engle, is not the ideal place to start getting into the cartoon but it’s a fun addition for people who are already fans of the cartoon.

The entire volume consists of 4 issues written by Jeremy Sorese that can be read as simple one-shots with each issue accompanied by two short stories. Jeremy does well with defining the characters and how the actual cartoon’s supposed to go.

Coleman Engle’s artwork captures the show’s art style nicely as every panel’s just filled with fun. With every panel, the fun’s greatly complimented with the lettering that looks very energetic.

As for the short stories by Sam Bosma, Kali Ciesemier, Josceline Fenton, Jackie Forrentino, Stu Livingston, Raven M. Molisee, Mad Rupert are included in each issue, did the job well with the writing. While there are a number of writers/artists included in this volume each short story manages to make itself unique especially how the art styles manage to still capture the cartoon’s look with some minor touch ups to differentiate themselves.

Overall, Steven Universe Vol. 1  introduces new fans to how the cartoon’s supposed to play out with the fun writing and energetic artwork but you won’t find a “This is how Steven Universe started” type of story in here.
