Powerhouse writer Scott Snyder and fan-favorite artist John Romita Jr. team-up for their highly anticipated project ALL-STAR BATMAN #1 which was released last week!
Personally, I’ve been waiting for this to come out since it was announced. Scott Snyder is comic book ROYALTY, something he proved over and over again with his run on the Batman solo series. I love this guy, and with THE John Romita Jr. on art? Man, you’re just asking me to root for this run.
Let’s get to it. It starts with Batman facing off against Firefly, Killer Moth and Black Spider in (here’s the catch) a diner outside of Gotham. This seems to be the theme of Snyder’s beginning arc; taking Batman out of Gotham. This isn’t something that hasn’t been done before, but this seems to be different, it’s a bit more contained, more intimate in a sense but exciting in it’s own way because this time around he’s got a new companion: Two-Face.
“Maybe fittingly, the first arc … takes Batman and Two-Face on a high-octane, high-stakes road trip across the state. It’s a journey filled with villains I’ve never used, some deep cuts, some heavy hitters. It’s a deeply personal story too, but above all, it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen by me.”
- S. Snyder
Do you believe in Harvey Dent? Two-Face has always been a unique and entertaining villain on the page mainly because he embodies both sides of Batman’s crazy mythos: the dark intense world of Gotham’s criminal underground and the crazier zany world of super-villains. This time around, taking over the crime world is the endgame. By putting a bounty on Batman’s head, Two-Face successfully sends the crime families in disarray by threatening to bring their dirty laundry into the light. Batman doesn’t have a choice but to take him and himself far away from Gotham by “taking the Batmobile off-roading”.
I like the idea of the whole buddy road trip thing and for sure this is gonna bring out some really good panels and dialogue from both Romita Jr. & Snyder. Not to mention the style and color scheme that Romita Jr. brings to the table.
Moon Knight artist Declan Shalvey also showcases his pencil work with the one-off story “The Cursed Wheel” giving us a taste of Batman’s latest sidekick: Duke Thomas. I got a good feeling we’re finally going to get his name in this arc. Hopefully, because the best I can come up with at the moment is Yellow Robin or Canary Boy and I don’t think my ideas are going to sit well with fans!
Overall, everyone should hop on this new series with All-Star Batman#1 whether you’re new to the genre or just itching for a great Batman experience. It’s fresh, bold and a colorful change of pace.
