Kick-Ass. Super Crooks. Hit-Girl. Huck. Kingsman. All of these comics books have one thing in common – Mark Millar. Once again after blowing his audience away with Jupiter’s Legacy and Jupiter’s Circle, Millar is ready to present the continuation of it with – Jupiter’s Legacy 2.
Jupiter’s Legacy 2 #1 is about the adventures of Chloe, Hutch and their son, Jason as they search other super-villains who went “lie low” in order to stop the oppression that is being established by the super heroes. But if you think this is your another humdrum comic book story with people with super powers fighting one another. Then, let me change your perspective.
It is noticeable that Jupiter’s Legacy 2# 1 had quick-paced narrative from the short flashback of moments from the first volume to the present. It was nippy, but it presented the new narrative in a very elegant manner without going overboard. The creative team handled the story in a manner wherein the characters’ volatile personalities didn’t overtake or clash with the plot line. The personalities of these three characters readily set me in an adventure that I know that it’ll be different than the ones that presented in the first volume. They were first class characters that you could easily relate with, despite having powers. Also, the panel wherein the readers were introduced to the background of Hutch made the spectators even more curious. (And if you are, it is time to read Jupiter’s Circle.)

One of the things about this issue that I was looking forward seeing was from artist Frank Quitely‘s captivating artwork. If there wasn’t a lot of action happening in this issue, he still delivered that same flavor that set my eyes to this new volume. Quitely’s talent easily surfaced in the swiftness of the character’s movements, and also in the panelling. His visuals were full of life and so as the layout. But most of all, Quitely successfully delivered the atmosphere that Millar wanted to deliver to his readers – the action, the tension and emotions. All of them can be easily seen and felt. For a first issue, Jupiter’s Legacy 2 seems to be in another level than to its predecessors.
I’ve also became aware of Sunny Gho‘s coloring. It was vivacious and refreshing which made each panels come out that way. Let’s not also forget Peter Doherty‘s lettering, which were carefully placed in the panels with ease despite the action of the artwork. It was an ease to read the pages.
Overall, Jupiter Legacy 2 #1 was such a very interesting opening issue with already good action and tension going on. On the face value, you are going to think twice if it is worth a read. But when you started reading and flipping page after page, I assure you that Mark Millar has taken his writing to another level to deliver his universe in ease. Prepare for a one heck of a ride, readers.
