Empress-005-CoverQueen Emporia’s escape from her tyrant husband King Morax continues on in Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen’s Empress #5. But with five issues in, it certainly feels like their destination is still a long ways to come.

Emporia’s children has been kidnapped and are to be sold for slavery. And it is up to Dane and the group to rescue them. This set-up opens up Millar’s chance to focus on the children in this issue, finally giving them some much needed character development. Something that has been missing early on.

At this point in the series it’s almost definite that the journey itself is more important than the destination. And Millar uses the various problems the group faces as a way to introduce new worlds and characters to the story. However, so far nothing has felt like a real threat and are only there for the sake of world-building.

King Morax seems to be taking his sweet time chasing them too. He appears to be way behind in the chase, and considering he’s the main baddie here, it’s not doing him any favors.

Stuart Immonen’s pencils are still the strongest aspect of this title. The amount of detail he puts in the world-building is impressive. Add in Wade von Grawbadger’s inks and Ive Svorcina’s color, the three really make the perfect art team for the job.

It makes me wonder what the end game is here. With two issues left in the mini-series, I feel like something drastic is bound to happen. The ride has been enjoyable so far, and I bet it’s going to be a really good one once it’s collected in a single volume.
