Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples surprise Saga readers yet again because this time around, no major characters are sacrificed! Saga #36 is the end of the sixth Saga chapter and truth to be told here, I really never ever expected this finale.

Yes, there is a rescue mission by the couple. Yes, there is the match-up that we are eagerly waiting since last issue. And yes, there are lives hanging in the balance since last or two issues ago. Yet, Brian K. Vaughan provides readers a couple of cliffhangers and surprises along the way to make this finale more unpredictable as ever. In the hands of other writers, this story would be boring, irritating, predictable, and nonsensical. But Brian does exactly the complete opposite. He gives us a great mother-and-daughter tear jerking moment. Hazel’s monologues and reactions are pitch perfect. The bantering is still present, especially with Prince IV and Alana. And our favorite Ghus, he goes into a rage! And the biggest surprise, another new member to the growing family!

As for the artist, Fiona remains at top of her game. Her facial portrayal of characters almost brought me to tears. Her sequential paneling, artistic pacing, inking, and angular projections are simply excellent to view, mesmerize, and look over. Almost flawless is the next best thing I can say.
Surprisingly, there are less obscene imagery. But just the same for the kissing scene of same-sex gender and the part Prince IV bludgeoned an enemy may find them to some people disturbing.
Saga #36 ends a high and positive note. Unlike its previous finale, this is very refreshing, well-written, and artistically crafted. The creative team of Saga mentions in the letter’s page about something big in the next story arc. I can’t wait for that one!
