The Cosmania Experience

It is a great time to be a geek! A phrase that most of us say these days. True enough, all that we dream of when we were little are now featured in television, movies, toys, video games or mostly everywhere. In the Philippines, we have countless of events and conventions to celebrate our passion for anything geek and pop-culture all year long.

From the number of events that I’ve covered for Flipgeeks, I haven’t been to a single Cosplay Mania or Cosmania. As luck would have it, last October 1, 2016, I happen to get an invite to my very first Cosmania. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect at Cosmania and how it is different from the other conventions that we regularly attend. I was asked to cover the event and my original plan was just to go around the convention floor, take pictures and stay may be for an hour or two.

To those who frequent geek events or conventions, Cosmania has all of the things that you could expect at cons: cosplayers, special guests, booths, exhibitors, merchandise, toys and food stalls. Since Cosmania is a celebration of the cosplay culture, fans in droves flocked to the SMX Convention Center in their awesome costumes. I also joined in on the celebration and wore my Charmander onesie for the event.

From walking around Cosmania and talking to different fans, I finally realized what makes this convention different. What makes Cosmania different is its fans, the people who support and go to this event every year. I was only able to talk to a select few but as I was talking to them, I can feel how passionate they are about the culture. It’s nice being around people who share the same passion, it’s inspiring to see how their eyes light up as they talk about their favorite character, seeing how much fun they’re having while cosplaying and the joy they bring to others. There’s so much more to cosplay than just putting on a costume and it’s beautiful.

My original plan of staying short ended up with me spending half the day. It was nice hanging out with friends and with people who I just met at the event. I had at great time at Cosmania and I’m looking forward to going back next year (hopefully in full cosplay).
