GAME REVIEW: FINAL FANTASY: EPISODE PROMPTO – Prepare your ticket to Feeladelphia

STORY

If you have played Final Fantasy XV, this DLC focuses on the group’s resident funny guy, Prompto Argentum. The game tips off several days after Noctis inadvertently pushed Prompto off a moving train on their way to Tenebrae. Finding himself on the brink of death in the middle of a snowstorm caused by the “death” of the Glacian, the Magitek Empire arrived to bring him to a research facility. From there, you must find a way out of the facility to reunite with your chocobros.

After escaping from the research facility, you’ll get to enjoy the open world section of this DLC. You’ll also have access to a snowmobile, which you can upgrade via side quests. In my opinion, the free roam component and side quests makes this DLC more enjoyable than Episode Gladious. During Prompto’s journey, you will find out more information about his identity, which is the game’s end goal. You’ll have to reconnect with your inner child to find out what you really want. Fortunately, during all the feels in the story, you will find the ever-sophisticated Aranea joining blondie on his quest.

Finishing the game will unlock the Lion Heart (pistol) and the Tundra Attire, both of which you can use in the main game. In addition, we get a teaser to Episode Ignis, which comes out on December 2017.

G A M E P L A Y

The gameplay is significantly different from the main game since Prompto is the ranged member of the group. Although you have a melee weapon, you’ll have to switch between his trusty pistol, submachine guns, sniper rifles, bazookas and grenades depending on the situation and availability. You will also have a tech bar which will let you use Starshell, Selfie Shot and once you’ve finished the game, the Trigger Happy Bullet Art.

V I S U A L S  &  P E R F O R M A N C E

This DLC retains the same visual style of the main game. However, much like in Episode Gladiolus, the health meter and the Menu section is personalized for Episode Prompto, sporting orange, black and white hues. As previously mentioned, the setting of this adventure is a research facility deep within the snowy countryside of Niflheim. I’d also like to add that I find the music of Final Fantasy games remarkable, and Episode Prompto’s OST is no exception. The main theme and selected tracks were composed by Naoshi Mizuta, a veteran video game composer.

V E R D I C T

The best part of this game is the story. I would say a lot of us can relate to Prompto’s story much more than the rest of the royal retinue. You might actually have to punch a wall to feel manly again after one (or a few) of the scenes. However, this game would have been a lot better if the Final Boss was not that easy to kill. It just really ruined the mood for me.
