Just in time for the Halloween season is our review of a survivor horror game, The Evil Within 2. When I’ve learned that the first game was being directed by Shinji Mkami, the person behind the original Resident Evil, I was excited! After seeing the trailer that the game is located inside a mental hospital, I thought that it could be the same mansion in the original Resident Evil. However, as I started the game, I was wrong, very wrong. The Evil Within is in a whole another level when it comes to survivor horror.

I didn’t get myself to finish the original as I was scared out of my wits and after a few chapters in, I quit. Recently, I was able to try a demo of The Evil Within 2 at the Playstation booth during E-Sports and Gaming Summit (ESGS) 2017 and based from what I experienced, I think I’m brave enough to play the sequel. But am I?

STORY

The Evil Within 2 is set three years after the events of the original game and the now ex-detective, Sebastian Castellanos is still haunted by the loss of his wife Myra and the death of his daugther Lily,  when their house burned down. While drowning himself with alcohol, Sebastian is approached by Juli Kidman, his former partner and a Mobius agent. Kidman revealed that Sebastian’s daughter is alive and Mobius needs his help not only to help find her daughter but also help extract Mobius agents. Saving Lily meant saving the agents as well.

Sebastian having known that there is a possibility that his daughter is alive, reluctantly agrees to the deal and is brought to the Mobius secret facility. In the facility, Sebastian is introduced to the Administrator, who revealed that they saved his daughter from the fire and was the core of their matrix-like system called STEM prior to her disappearance. Now, Sebastian must go inside the STEM to a virtual Anywhere Town, USA called Union.

This is basically the premise of the game and is well crafted that even if you have little to zero knowledge of the original game, you wouldn’t feel lost playing the game. It’s a brand new story and everything else about the original was an afterthought.

VISUALS

Right from the get go, the Evil Within 2 would scare and surprise the hell out of you. Errie background noise, dark corridors, decapited bodies, and other disturbing images, the game developers really does know how to scare people. It always gives you that feeling of not knowing what lies ahead, a feeling of helplessness, which makes this game a whole lot horrifying. As I was playing through the game’s first chapter, I said to myself, this isn’t what I played during the demo, what is this? Again, I almost quit playing and not being able to finish this game. But being the gamer that I am, I soldiered on with my first playthrough.

These visuals are stuff that nightmares are made of.

GAMEPLAY

As of this writing, I’m currently playing at Chapter 3. I’ve only had the game a since the weekend and I’m no longer able to put my controller down. After Chapter 1, things begin to settle down and you’re able to play with a normal heartbeat again. Hahaha.

The Evil Within 2 is a third person, survival horror game, which is divided into three difficulty modes Casual, Survival, Nightmare. If you’re new to the survival horror genre, the game suggests you to play Casual but for experienced gamers you can try the other 2 modes. For this review, I’m playing with the Survival difficulty.

The game is also part an open-world game, which lets you roam around the streets in the town of Union. The Evil Within 2 now has side-quests that not only tells you what happened in Union but also helps you level up Sebastian.
As you wander around town, you’ll pick up different items that would help you such as weapons, ammunitions, herbs, and weapon parts. TIP: pick-up EVERYTHING that you can, resources are scarce in this game and only use a gun whenever necessary.

Speaking of fights, the combat system allows you to stealth kill monsters in the game, something similar to games like The Last Of Us and Metal Gear Solid. This is a useful feature as it helps you conserve ammo for stronger monsters. However, not everyone can be killed with the stealth kill, some monsters requires two stealth kills before they are put down. You level up with the green gel, which is dropped off by the monsters you kill. Having said that, it means you need to kill almost everything in this game but don’t go with guns blazing as that would mean your death, so carefully plan your kills. Similar to the first game, you need to visit the nurse from the dimensional mirror to have your skills upgraded.

You’ll have 2 sets of weapons, mellee and ranged. So far tghe ranged weapons that I managed to get were a pistol, a sniper rifle, shotgun and the signature weapon from the first game, the crossbow. As for melee, you have a handy knife and occassionally pick up axes that does a one-hit kill for most enemies. Another tip, invest in bottles as they not only create a distraction for your enemies but is very helpful when you caught yourself in a bind.

You can upgrade your weapons through the games crafting system, the workbench. Workbenches lets you create ammunition, upgrade, and customize your weapons. Workbenches can be mobile however, crafting would cost more as compared to when you are using the ones found in safehouses (savepoints).

OVERALL

The Evil Within 2 lets you relive the experience of playing your first survival horror game. As you play the game, you might notice similarities to other survival horror/action adventure games today. Imagine playing a game that is a combination of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, The Last of Us and Metal Gear and you’ll get The Evil Within 2. Unlike the original, The Evil Within 2 sets the right balance between horror and action that still allows players to have fun and enjoy the game. Don’t get me wrong, The Evil Within 2 is still a nerve-racking game and would keep you on your toes, the whole time. The Evil Within 2 antes up what survivor horror games should be.

Final Tip: The Evil Within 2 is best played with the lights off and headsets on. Also, try not to drink too much coffee when playing the game.

This review was written based on a retail copy of the game provided by the publisher.
