GAME REVIEW: Web-swinging through THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME

It’s been a week since the release of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and I still couldn’t get over the movie. I guess it’s only proper that after seeing the movie, it’s time that we also play the game. Last time we featured the trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME and fortunately I was able to get myself a copy and here’s what I think about the game. I played THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 for the PC and is also available for the PS3, PS4, Wii U and XBOX 360. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is developed by BEENOX (same developer of recent Spider-Man games) and published by ACTIVISION.
Video game movie adaptations haven’t been successful for the longest time that I remember. You can correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think that there has been a video game movie adaptation that became successful as the movie that came before it. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME is not full an adaptation of the movie, it has its own story line. The events in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME probably happened in-between the 2 Amazing Spider-Man movies. The story begins where the first movie left off and right before sequel happened. Set in the Amazing Spider-Man Movie Universe the game features characters like Aunt May, Kingpin, Harry Osborn, Kraven the Hunter, Shocker and Stan Lee who owns a book shop in the game.
In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME you of course play the role of everyone’s favorite wall-crawling superhero, Spider-man. In the game you go through roaming and web-slinging through the streets of New York City.In the game, you have a main mission and number of side quests similar to those of other open world, free roaming games. Gameplay wise there’s really nothing new that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME has to offer except for the web slinging of course! That’s where I believe the strength of this game lies, if you’re a big Spider-Man fan you’d definitely love swinging from building to building. The controller scheme was even placed properly that when you like to web-swing from your left hand you’d press the left button and the right button for your right. This gives you that realistic feeling of what it feels like to be Spidey swinging through the city because you couldn’t just swing around aimlessly, you need an actual object to shoot your webs to, if it’s an empty space you wouldn’t be able to perform the move at all.
Performing missions help you level up your Spider suit. In the game, you can wear a number of Spidey’s suits both from the comics and the movie. Each suit gives you different abilities so you may change suits depending on your mission or your preference in case you have a favorite. Another feature of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME is the “HEROIC” system. Side quests either increases your HERO or MENACE level. Helping out citizens throughout the city or stopping crime increases your HERO level while not performing ANY super-hero work increases your MENANCE level. Sadly, the game does not really allow you to be a villain or an actual MENACE; you earn that tag by not really doing anything at all, which I think is a big let-down in the game. After a few levels, the HEROIC system would became an actual chore, as its repetitive and does not offer a lot of variations to the missions.
What is really disappointing about this game, is the voice acting. I wished that since the developers obtain the license for the game they could have at least acquired the actual actors who played in the movie. It’s just awkward hearing Peter or Spidey’s voice, either its too deep or is it just me that I feel like he’s reading it off a script. Some of Spidey’s jokes could have been funnier if delivered properly, in the game it just sounded lame. This would be the biggest complain I’d have about this game.
I’d say that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME is on the right direction. I still couldn’t matched games similar on its genre like the ASSASSIN CREED or ARKHAM games but it’s good enough to be included in that list. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 THE GAME doesn’t live up to its name of being AMAZING since it doesn’t have a lot of new things to offer and might be an acquired taste for most gamers yet it’s still a good game with detailed graphics and has everything that you’d probably look for in a Spider-Man game, so if you’re a fan of the genre or huge Spider-Man fan (like I am) this game is fun enough to play. For seasoned gamers you’d most likely pass on this game.
