PGF 2014: FREAKSHOW Preview

One of the games that we were lucky enough to try at this year’s Philippine Game Festival is Funguy Studios’ Freakshow. The game was a first person shooter set in a carnival where your worst nightmares come to life in the dead of the night.

We spoke with one of the game’s developers Mr. Darwin Tardio and he described that the objective of the game is to survive a series of nights with limited weaponry. After each night (level), you’d do inventory management to prepare you for the coming night. As each day progresses the game becomes more difficult and it’s up to the player how you are going to survive the game with limited weaponry.

Freakshow was actually a side project by the developers and the demo that we got to play was done in about 4-5 weeks. Mr. Darwin also mentioned that the game was inspired by “I am Legend” wherein the creatures come out of the dark at night.

Freakshow was actually one of the games that caught our attention at PGF 2014 as they were one of the games who uses the Oculus Rift. Playing the game with the Oculus Rift enhances the gaming experience. It becomes a totally new game as compared to a regular FPS (First Person Shooter). In a regular FPS you’re a few inches away from your monitor but once you put on the Oculus it gives you the feeling of actually being IN the game. When you look to any direction the Oculus follows your view, which gives you a 360 degree view of the game.

Dark Cherubs and Evil Clowns are the nightmares you’d encounter in the early version of Freakshow. The gameplay is reminiscent of the early Doom and Duke Nukem games where you get to slug it out with monsters using different weaponry. In its early stage, we liked how detailed the game is. The carnival has roller coasters, merry go rounds, tents, things you’d actually find in a carnival. The only comment that we had about the game was motion sickness which the developers acknowledged. They even shared that one of their developers has a bottle of Paracetamol at his side when working on this game.

Funguy Studios’ Freakshow is a game that has a lot of potential. Just imagine a big clown coming out of the dark and starts to chase you with a knife and you got no ammo left, what are you going to do?  The developers at Funguy Studios knows how to bring out the fun and scare you the heck out of your wits at the same time.

We wish you all the best luck and we look forward to try out the full version of the game in the future.
