Lacks spice. Charming and pleasant movie, but not entirely memorable.

Aside from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the BFG is one of Roald Dahl’s beloved tales from childhood. If you have read the book, you’ll surely feel a pang of nostalgia while watching the movie. The BFG also had an animation adaptation back in the 1980s. With this latest movie adaptation by Speilberg and Disney, it is a mixture of stunning visuals and a heartwarming storyline. It highlights the themes of friendship and courage.

BFG-02

In a fictional London, The BFG or Big Friendly Giant starts off with Sophie being taken away by the BFG to far,far away aka Giant Country. Sophie warms up to the BFG when she found out that he collects, archives and delivers dreams to young children like her. But, not all giants are like the BFG, there are also the man-eating kind of giants. Now, Sophie and the BFG team up to take these giants down with a little help from Queen Victoria to get rid of these nasty giants once and for all.

Sophie is played by the relatively newcomer, Ruby Barnhill. Barnhill captures Sophie’s quick-witted and smart character. As for the BFG, he is portrayed by the award-winning actor, Mark Rylance. With many experiences in film and theatre, Rylance is able to showcase the BFG’s warmth and adorable personality to the big screen.

BFG-05

Surprisingly for a Disney production, it has a dark tones, and eerie vibes and a feeling of uncertainty at the beginning of the film. As for the visual effects, Speilberg never fails to amaze the audience!  He brings magic and spectular pictures that makes us want more. Although, this is one of the favorites by Dahl, the movie is pleasant and heartwarming. But, it lacks a certain charisma to make it truly memorable. But, with Roald Dahl’s fantastic imagination and Spielberg’s direction, the BFG is still a movie to catch!

The BFG is now showing in theaters nationwide. Special thanks to Walt Disney PH and the British Embassy for powering our review.
