5 Reasons to See Sineng Pambansa Horror Film Festival

Sineng Pambansa Horror plus film festival The Sineng Pambansa Horror Plus Film Festival, organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), will be catering four films this October, all helmed by master Filipino directors.

The films include T’yanak by co-directors Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, Hukluban by director Gil Portes, Bacao by director Edgardo Vinarao, and Sigaw sa Hatinggabi by director Romy Suzara.

With it opening on October 29 until November 4, we’re listing down five reasons to see this year’s entries just in time for the Halloween season:

5. Remake of the 1988 film T’yanak

Tiyanak (1988) and T’yanak (2014)

Remember the catchphrase “Anak ni Janice” in the 90s? If yes, you’re in for a treat. If no, maybe this generation will have its version in the form of “Anak ni Juday” eh?

Twenty six years after the release of the classic T’yanak film comes this re-imagined horror under the same directors: Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes.

Reprising the role that originally starred Janice de Belen, Judy Ann Santos will portray Julie, a childless woman who will bring a baby under her wing, unaware of its devil nature. Cast includes Tom Rodriguez, Solenn Heussaff, Sid Lucero, and Mailes Kanapi.

Penning the script is Wanggo Gallaga, son of director Peque, also the one behind last year’s Sineng Pambansa entry “Sonata” starring Cherie Gil, which bagged awards at the 2014 Star Awards for Movies and Gawad Urian Awards.

4. Fresh faces in director Gil Portes’ film Hukluban

That’s one interesting poster, isn’t it?

Can true love really conquer all? Newcomers Kiko Matos (‘Mumbai Love‘) and Krista Miller will try on Gil Portes’ (‘Ang Tag-araw ni Twinkle’, ‘Markova: Comfort Gay‘) latest gothic romance film Hukluban. It tells the story of Mira, a young and beautiful but enigmatic woman with the vibe of an old soul. She bears a secret curse, romancing three men in different timelines.

3. “Big Brother” kind of horror set in Sigaw Sa Hatinggabi

That’s… eerie

Director Romy Suzara already have 58 films under his belt including: Sarah, Ang Munting Prinsesa (1995), Cedie (1996), and Kokey (1997) to name a few. This time, he will haunt the audience with his latest film Sigaw sa Hatinggabi.  The film is told in a “Big Brother house” type of setting where a documentary TV production crew records a group trying to deduce a high profile crime in which a ghost is the suspect. The cast includes Regine Angeles, Richard Quan, Afi Africa, Vangie Labalan, Chanel Latorre, David Karell, Alvin Anson, and Paloma.

 2. First lead role of Michelle Madrigal in Bacao

After winning the Sineng Pambansa Scriptwriting contest for the thriller genre last year, Edgardo “Boy” Vinarao’s introduces to us his latest film entitled Bacao which tackles the struggle of a young wife who’s having trouble getting pregnant. Mayet (Michelle Madrigal) experiences sexual awakening upon her marriage to Abel (Arnold Reyes) and while their village is in the midst of a corn bountiful harvest, their sensual partnership also flourishes, though it is paradoxically fruitless.  Mayet’s anxiety and paranoia grows as pregnancy evades her.  To what extent will Mayet go to fulfill her desire of having a child?
