Black Mass: Johnny Depp’s Most Riveting Performance Yet!
Even before the movie Black Mass came out in theaters, critics have already been raving about three-time Oscar nominee Johnny Depp’s gritty performance in the Scott Cooper helmed gangster thriller. Based on real life South Boston crime lord Jimmy ‘Whitey’ Bulger, Black Mass is a dark & gritty film devoid of sunshine and rainbows which features a cast of characters with no moral compass to speak of and whose aliance was only to themselves and their interests.
While Black Mass was both enjoyable and entertaining from the shock of the film’s violent and brazen scenes and a complicated story which revolves around criminals, corruption, and bond tried, tested and broken; the plot may have suffered in part of it being based on true events which span a number of years. There is no rising action to climax anticipation to keep you at the edge of your seat. “Black Mass” is more of a sit-back, educate yourself and contemplate kind of movie.
Despite the lack of a traditional plot line, Johnny Depp’s superb performance alone makes the movie worth watching.
