Is the GAIKING Live Action Film Coming in the Form of PACIFIC RIM

Here’s a thought. What if the oh-so-mysterious “Pacific Rim” movie that Guillermo Del Torro is currently hard at work on was actually the Gaiking live-action that swirled across the Internet a few years ago?

Remember this awesome and very crpytic video that we saw featuring the giant mecha Gaiking coming out of some debris and then getting ready to fly?

Yeah that one. I just thought that there’s a lot of similarity between this Japan based project to that of the mysterious Pacific Rim. Aside from the cast which includes (perennial favorite here on this site) Idris Elba and the general synopsis (which is basically about giant robots battling giant monsters) we really don’t know anything about this movie.

What you punk ass lookin’ at?

Then there was also another image that surfaced featuring Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi wearing the same armor now with a better look at their helmet.

… their helmet; where have I seen that helmet?

Oh right. That was the same helmet and near identical armor that the mysterious Gaiking pilot was wearing when he/she/it started the ignition for the massive mecha.
Here’s another thing.
FACT: The Gaiking movie was expected to be released either 2012 or 2013.
FACT: Pacific Rim has a release date of 2013. Initially it was rumored to be 2012 but was later moved (or so I heard anyway).
Another prima facie evidence that I’d like to present would be the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi actionadventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”, “Prometheus“), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Del Toro’s behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

Slated for release in Summer 2013, “Pacific Rim” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

So what could that “Legendary” Jaeger be? I mean its pretty easy to write something that would tie-up Gaiking’s continuity into this new movie. Believe me, I can already think of 20 things and plot points that can be directly connected to the film.

While this little theory of mine seems to be shaky at the moment, I’ll have to dig deeper into this and see if I can find out any other detail about this film. Or maybe I can just sit back and hang tight as there are rumors that a teaser or some sort of promotional material might find its way to Comic-Con.
