The 5 Overlooked Roles of Hugh Jackman

Bonus Round: Hugh Jackman as Gaston from Australia’s production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in 1996.

 Hugh5

You’ve seen him belt high notes as Jean Valjean but let’s wind the clock back to Hugh’s humble beginnings. Hugh Jackman, 27 at the time, was a fresh graduate of Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and he got a huge break as he was discovered for a million dollar Australian theater production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as the despicable Gaston.

“Gaston is such an emotional character and is physically demanding. I often feel like Peter Garrett from Midnight Oil … dripping sweat throughout each performance.” (Variety Today, 1996; On With The Show Australia, 2012). Hugh was said to have trained 5 times a week to keep himself in shape — little does he know he’s going to have a future of roles where it is rather physically demanding. I myself have not seen the entirety of the production since around the time this came out i was nowhere in the world but watching these clips do made me wish he ended up getting the role of Gaston in the live action Beauty and the Beast film.
