a KOMIKON Experience – PART 2
If you missed it, read A Komikon Experience – Part 1
Since i arrived around lunchtime, i missed some of their programs. I think there was some contests, but I’ve forgotten it immediately when i saw the number of indy people present – and it totally got me excited. After i looked at the non-komiks booths, there was an announcement onstage that the SULYAP (an anthology/compilation of komiks they released on the event) panel will start, so I decided to look around quickly at the komiks booths.
I found Harvey Tolibao (below, right), chatted with him regarding the awesome covers he makes, and found out that he’ll be going to Singapore for a comic convention there. Also found Macoy Tang, Gio Paredes and Omeng Estanislao (below, left) – thanks for letting us interview you guys!
When the SULYAP panel started, i went to the stage area, along with some few people who were really interested on what these guys wanted to say. There were 2 parts, the people in the panel are – Gio Paredes, Mel Casipit, Tepai Pascual, Omeng Estanislao, Macoy Tan, etc. Here’s a summary of their panel Q&A’s:
Host: What did the artists initially thought when they were invited to collaborate in SULYAP?
Panel: They were surprised, thought it was a joke. But they thought of it also as an oppurtunity to promote their works and also as a milestone, a part of their career.
Host: Do you they have Day jobs?
Panel: Yes, they have. They need it to fund their projects, because working on comics full-time does not work for them for now. But they will continue making their comics as long as there is support.
Host: What is their stand with online comics, and posting their stuff online?
Panel: They’re cool with it. Posting their stuff online for marketing , putting up previews definitely helps their work. That previews are helpful also so that readers can have a look first at the comics, and if they are interested they’ll surely buy it.
Host: How do they distribute their products?
Panel: Local Comic Shops like Comic Odyssey, Sputnik help them .
Host: Why did they enter the comics industry and create their indy comics?
Panel: Some said it was for fun, for their self fulfillment, and some said they want to share their work and stories to the people.
