COMIC BOOK REVIEW: Avenging Spider-Man #2 (by Wells and Joe Mad)

Flipgeeks team reviewing Avenging Spider-Man # 2 by Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira.

Earl’s Take:

Another fun take at the classic Marvel team ups featuring the oh-still-great art of Joe Madureira together with the writing of Zeb Wells continues this month.

The book continues the adventures of Spider-Man with his teammate Rulk (Thunderbolt Ross) who comes finally wakes up from their sleep last ish. The book continues the trend of delivering funny lines together with insane action.

A decade or so after he made a huge splash in Uncanny X-Men, Madureira’s art is still pretty strong. Sure we don’t see that much movement between each panel, its not that dynamic but the simple fusion of western elements together with eastern manga/anime styles still work well for this book.

What are the other reasons why you should get this book? Well for one, it contains another digital code for the second issue which you can use for the Marvel Google Chrome app or for the iPad or even for your android powered tablet. Another reason to get Avenging Spider-Man # 2 is because of the small details like the stupidity of J. Jonah Jameson or the comedic dialogues and quips Spidey provides through most of the issue.

What I didn’t like about the book however is the fact that there are some panels that weren’t really necessary and yet were added in. Splash pages featuring the moloid’s subterranean home could have been cut short to make way for other important scenes such as the battle between Rulk and the new ruler of the Moloids.

In some pages of the book, the colors were a little off. I don’t know if the printer was to blame or maybe it was the colors but for Madureira’s style, bland colors will definitely kill the art; which obviously happened.

That flaw aside, there is nothing more I could wish for from Avenging Spider-man. its really a fun romp through the different locales in the Marvel Universe and its a good way to show the team dynamics between Spidey and his guest star.

VERDICT: 4/5

Norby’s Take:

“RULK!”, a line in Avenging Spider-Man #2 that I really liked. The whole issue came with poppy, eye candy art from Joe Madureira and bombastic lines and funnies from Zeb Wells.

Zeb Wells expanded a bit of character rapport between the Red Hulk and our friendly-neighborhood Spidey. The script expressed the belief system of both two. As well as showing frantics from J. Jonah Jameson, Showing him the ol’ time J. Jonah Jameson that we really know.

Joe Madureira did a solid job as always as he did in the previous issue. The coloring by Ferran Daniel tuly complimented and supported with his pencils.

If you don’t want to fall asleep or need a laugh, go ahead and get Avenging Spider-Man.
