COMIC BOOK REVIEW: AvX # 2

Reviewing Avengers vs X-Men or AvX # 2 from Marvel Comics written by Jason Aaron with John Romita Jr.

What’s to Like:

- Avengers storming the beaches of Utopia

- King Cyclops getting his face smashed by Captain America

- Both Avengers and X-Men pulling their little tricks at each other.

- Wolverine getting called a “traitor”

- The Phoenix Force draws near

The battle between the Avengers and The X-Men continue. The first issue told the story of who hit first so it naturally occurs that the second story will be all about the consequences of Cyclops’ action.

John Romita’s artwork here is still the same. There’s very little changes in terms of the style and its still a rather unique art approach. The artist is known for doing a lot of great character moments and you’ll see here that this facet is still in effect. My only problem with the art for # 2 was that with the number of characters duking it out, its definitely hard to make each one of them appealing. For example, I loved how Magik was waiting for Dr. Strange in Limbo but the art approach made it very hard to “like” this particular story. Also if you already picked up the book, that there are some panels where Wolverine was drawn with a rather twisted scowl on his face. In another panel, Logan’s face was drawn obliquely making him look more like a character from a Picasso painting rather than one of the world’s deadliest mutant.

I have very little complaints with the way panned out in this issue. My biggest concern however was the continuity barfs. For example in New Avengers # 24 we see Rulk shouting stuff at the Avengers as they JUMP down the hellicarrier. In AVX # 2 , that particular scene is absent. Instead we see Magneto and Colossus doing a “magnetic fastball special” at the hellicarrier causing it to crash.

Continuity blips aside, the book looked cool. It was an all-out action book. I’m betting that writer Jason Aaron was having a grand time scripting this issue as its filled with punches and lowblows and burning flesh.

VERDICT: 4/5
