COMIC BOOK REVIEW: Justice League # 11

Comic book review for Justice League # 11 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee

In this issue the team recovers from Graves’ attack at the Watchtower. We find out the final fate of Steve Trevor and we also witness a fight between Wonder Woman and some of her teammates in the JL. Now for the review itself.

I like the idea of the team starting to succumb to the pressure. For me its such an interesting thing to see a team member go off half-cocked due to a problem and the rest of his/ her teammates try to reel said teammember back into the fold. It’s also a classic trope that’s been used and abused in a lot team books.

In this case we see New 52 Wonder Woman lashing out at her teammates due to her desperation in finding former Team 7 member and Justice League liaison Steve Trevor. You see last issue saw Graves capturing and interrogating Trevor regarding access to the ultra-secret Justice League watch tower. The team then finds Graves inside the Watchtower and all hell breaks loose. This issue shows a  badly beaten Trevor trying to escape.

As always, Jim Lee’s artwork is in itself a reason to buy the book. If you don’t find the story appealing then at least buy the book for it’s great art. There’s actually tons of great character moments in this book that you may or may not notice. We finally see a battle between Green Lantern and Wonder Woman as well as a Superman vs Wonder Woman moment somewhere in the middle of the book. All of which was orchestrated from afar by David Graves to discredit the Justice League.

Honestly speaking the two characters here who actually showed their core characteristic are Batman and Aquaman. Batman is being the stubborn and serious Batman once more while Arthur is fast showing why he should be considered as a bad-ass and an invaluable member to the League. Speaking of Aquaman he also gets to show why he’s a king as he’s pretty good with ordering people to stop fighting.

Plus its also a good prelude to when you pick up Justice League # 12 which is being controversial thanks to that variant “kiss cover” featuring Superman and Wonder Woman.

Writer Geoff Johns wasn’t trying as much as what he should be in this issue. It really felt like he was just trying to provide the necessary plots but never cared to flesh out more quips or characterization for all his characters. Some of the weaker parts though come from the Flash in this issue.

Great job however for trying to show that at least one member of the team is straddling between the lines of life and death which was needed in order to see the dead people and the hidden mystic place that Graves has ran off to.

The ending was a bummer as well (I guess mainly because I was expecting said person to have lived off long enough to make a statement)… Either way its still an eye candy book.

VERDICT: 8/10
