Marvel Announces New Ongoing Series UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL

Marvel made a surprise announcement via Entertainment Weekly revealing a new ongoing comic book series starring Squirrel Girl, written by Ryan North with art by Erica Henderson. Aptly titled Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, the series will feature the titular character go through life in college while defending the Earth from cosmic threats. The series will debut in January 2015.

Created by Steve Ditko and Will Murray in 1992, Squirrel Girl is a mutant with the ability to control squirrels. A running joke for for her is that despite looking like a comedy character in a furry squirrel costume, she’s been able to defeat every major supervillain she’s faced in the Marvel Universe — from Doctor Doom to Thanos himself. The variant cover by Arthur Adams is certainly a nod to this ongoing gag.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is the latest addition to Marvel’s recent push on more female-led titles. And judging by the covers, it’s intended have the same feel and tone as the publisher’s other young female-led book, Ms. Marvel, to entice more female readers. We’re all excited that Marvel is taking a big risk with a relatively obscure character (especially one that does not have any movie appearances) and this could be a book that you didn’t know you’ve always wanted.
