Nick Fury’s Whisper Revealed in THE UNWORTHY THOR #5

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Unworthy Thor #5.

The mystery of what Nick Fury whispered to Thor Odinson way back in the 2014 event, Original Sin, that made him unworthy of Mjolnir, is finally revealed in this week’s The Unworthy Thor #5. What Fury whispered to Thor was simply, “Gorr was right.”

To recap, Gorr the God Butcher was the main antagonist in the first storyarc in Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s Thor: God of Thunder. Having his prayers fall on deaf ears, Gorr lost his faith in all gods after losing his family and his home to years of famine. As a result, he set out to kill all gods in the universe. He and his master weapon, the Godbomb, were eventually defeated by the three Thors (present Thor, Viking Thor and King Thor) but without casting doubt in Odinson.

Gorr believed that all gods are selfish, unworthy and only bring misery to mortals; that mortals are much better off without them, which Thor Odinson seems to confirm later on in the issue.

So what’s in store for the future of Thor and the hammer? Odinson never picks up the hammer, noting that it belongs to another Thor. At the end of the issue a mysterious being who calls himself the War Thor picks up Ultimate Thor’s hammer. The War Thor will make his first full appearance in The Mighty Thor #20.

The Unworthy Thor #5 is available in stores now.
