Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates # 3 Review
Reviewing Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates # 3 by Mark Millar and Leinil Yu for Marvel Comics.
The new issue again continues the brewing war between Nick Fury‘s Black ops Avengers and SHIELD and Carol Danver’s New Ultimates squad with Captain America and Thor.
While last issue featured the reformation of Nick Fury‘s Ultimate Avengers teams and then like the classic Avengers of old, they come together to tackle the threat of former team mate, the first Hulk. When all was said and done, we witness the Hulk pin the actual blame on Carol Danvers and the rest of the New Ultimates.
This issue, Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates # 3 deals with the fallout and the actual war between the two in the mean streets of New York. Hawkeye and Blade together with a knocked out Carol Danvers get away via Hawkeye’s PURPLE sports car which is then picked up by the new replacement Giant Man – Scott Lang.
We also see how sneaky the black Fury can be when he wants to, sneaking up on both Danvers and Stark.
Great battles in the issue done by Yu also include a brawl between Iron Man (Tony Stark) and War Machine (James Rhodes)…
The new Black Widow also gets to meet Blade in battle.
Captain America goes wicked on Nick Fury while Punisher sets his sights on the Sentinel of Liberty.
While I’ve spoiled much of the story already, the last page makes you want to pick up the next issue of Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates as well as the upcoming issue of “Ultimate Spider-Man” with Mark Bagley returning as the artist and written by Brian Michael Bendis.
The dialogue was pretty nice in my opinion, I also found the art awesome against but there were some inconsistencies that can be overlooked. The colors were great.
For issue # 3, the cover was a good homage to the first appearance of the Punisher in the 616 Marvel Universe where we see Spider-Man in the middle of the Punisher’s crosshairs.
Of course, while the issue deals specifically with the battle between these two bad ass Ultimate teams, theres also an underpining event of the death of Spider-Man. True to his words, Millar does deliver for the third issue which ends with a cliffhanger.
And if you did catch the last issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, there’s also a looming threat of the return of the Ultimate Sinister Six which includes Kraven, Norman Osborn, Doctor Octopus and much much more. Oh and did I mention that they have a bone to pick not only with Peter Parker/ Spider-Man but also with the Ultimates especially since it was the Ultimates who took them down in the miniseries – “Ultimate Six”.
Definitely a must read for fans of the Ultimates and Ultimate Spider-Man.
