USAP-USAP LANG with APOL STA. MARIA On THE LAST VALENTINE’S DAY ON EARTH

This morning, I had a small chat with the creator of locally known, underground-bestseller – Ang Alamat Ng Panget, Apol Sta. Maria. We talked about a new anthology zine – ‘The Last Valentine’s Day on Earth‘. A book fused with talents coming outside from local comic book community.

FLIPGEEKS: Tell me about The new book ilalabas nyo tomorrow – The Last Valentine’s Day on Earth.
Apol Sta. Maria: Oks! Ayun, nagsimula yung idea last year sa Art in the Park din, nainvite ako ni Bru & Marcus of Electrolychee na magtinda ng stuff sa booth nila together with Folk Superlativ. Basically, yung mga names na kasama sa zine except for Dan Matutina and Dang Sering. Tapos originally, gusto ko talaga komiks ang mabuo namin
pero yun objective ko lang talaga ay pagsamahin yung mga yun sa isang compilation.

Fan ako ng artworks nila at curious ako makita kung magkomiks sila at yun nga, panalo
as usual, sana mas may time at pera para maproduce ng mas maganda at mapush ko pa yung mga hindi nagkomiks. Hehehe.

FG: I think a lot of regular artists na tinatry ang komiks is really wonderful.
ASM: Yes! Tama!

FG: I’m not familiar with those names pero I bet, pati din sa mga tao na nagaattend ng local comic-cons. San you tell me a little about them?
ASM: Ah, ok!

FG: Ok. Thanks. Bakit Valentine’s ang theme or topic ng anthology book nyo?
ASM: Isang mabilis na brainstorm lang yun e. Akala namin Feb. 11 yung Art in the Park. Tapos syempre sana may theme, para may konting effort. pinakamadali yung valentine’s dahil love-love at “last valentine’s’, kasi 2012
ayun simpleng simple lang ang brief.

FG: Does it contain single art pieces or komiks stories talaga?
ASM: May mga nagsubmit ng art pcs lang at meron ding komiks na narrative.

FG: Colored o black & white ba ang zine?
ASM: Black & white. Nako nakalimutan ko lagay yun sa description. Teka ayusin ko. Ahahaha.

FG: Kung B&W ang book may affect kaya yun sa mga art sa book?
ASM: Alam naman nila na UP Shopping Center productions yung gagawin e. Photocopy talaga ang intent

FG: That’s good. So are you the editor ba sa book Niro?
‘nito’, I mean. Sorry. Naka auto-correct kasi ang phone ko. Hehehe.

ASM: Haha. Medyo ‘di ko masabi kasi wala naman talagang editing na nangyari. Taga-kulit lang ng deadline
at ako pala yung nagpaxerox. So, yeah! Baka ako nga editor. Hahaha.

FG: Sa tingin nyo, how will this book affect to your readers and sa whole art-komiks community?
ASM: Mag-aattend na sila sa next Komikon. Hehe.

FG: After doing this book, naispire po ba ang artists na nakasama sa zine nito na gumawa ng komiks talaga?
ASM: Baka nga kumuha na kami ng booth. Yes! Nag enjoy daw sila.
FG: That’s good to hear.
ASM: Pangarap ko makabuo ng isa pa na mas mahahaba at makapagbind ng maganda.
FG: Awww, me too!
ASM: Haha.

FG: Ok so you’ll be selling the book sa art in the park tomorrow, right?
ASM: Yep! Punta ka ha. Hehe.
FG: Don’t wanna sound rude pero, ano ang ‘Art in the Park’?
ASM: Haha. Oks lang no. ‘Di yun ‘rude’. Annual event yun na ginawa ng Ayala Foundation. Nagiinvite sila ng galleries na mag tinda ng ‘art’. Sa park makikita mo ibang eksena at andami pwedeng makuhang inspiration. Hehe.

FG: How long have you been attending this event?
ASM: 2nd ko pa lang. Basta check mo yung mo links na pinadala ko sa yo ha.

FG: Anong klase na art meron dun. Expensive ba?
ASM: Parang tiangge lang sya ng art art. Haha. Pero madaming ok na tao, pwede tumambay at makipagkwentuhan
FG: Ooh, tiangge. Hahahha Affordable ba? Like any ordinary Juan can take home something home?
ASM: Ang alam ko ceiling price ay (PhP) 30k.
