Detective Pikachu just came out in cinemas, a live movie adaptation of the hit game that came out in 1996 on the original Nintendo Gameboy. Over the years it became a media franchise that released numerous games, animes, merchandise and of course, toys!
Bandai S.H.Figuarts released their Pokemon toy line, which includes Team Rocket, Ash and Pikachu, Mega Bashamo, Pikachu and what we are reviewing today, Charizard! Charizard is a fire type Pokemon, the evolved form of Charmander and is one of the original starter Pokemons from Pokemon Red/Blue/Green along with Bulbasaur and Squirtle.
PACKAGING 7/10
S.H.Figuarts’ Charizard is huge reason why it comes with a big box. Unlike most S.H.Figuarts there’s no transparent plastic in the box so you wouldn’t really see what’s inside in the box. Though the box art gives you a preview of what you can expect inside, I still prefer the traditional S.H.Figuarts packaging.
ACCESSORIES 9/10
Charizard comes with a number of accessories. Inside the box you’ll find a figure stand with a Pokeball design, an Earth backdrop and fire effects. Though this may not be the standard S.H.Figuarts action figure that comes with replaceable hands and face plates, S.H.Figuarts was generous to include an action figure base that doesn’t come along with most of its figures, so that alone is a major plus for me. Also, I loved that they gave fire effects for free, usually it’s sold separately. I’ve seen an S.H.Figuarts Pikachu it’s just a figure without thunder effects or the stand.
If Charizard came inside a Pokeball, it would have been PERFECT!
SCULPT AND PAINT 10/10
This figure perfectly captures the image and likeness of Charizard, as seen in the game and the anime. Even from afar, Charizard stands out with its bright orange color along with its red flames.
ARTICULATION 8/10
I would have to commend the ingenuity in making this figure. Charizard has many points of articulation from its mouth, neck, wings, arms, legs, and a lot on its tail! This figure is highly displayable though you need to pose it with care. Some parts feel stiff and if you put too much pressure, it might easily break. That is the reason why I was only able to capture a few poses of it.
OVERALL
Bandai S.H.Figuarts’ Charizard is a must have for any Pokemon fan! With its highly detailed design and paint job, it really makes Charizard stand out! It’ll make you feel like you own an actual Pokemon. However, a great figure like this doesn’t come cheap, Charizard retails for almost $100.00, even more on the resell market. For its price, you actually get your money’s worth due to the included base and effects. Unfortunately, this figure has sold out and is no longer in stands, so if you’re able to see one, better catch it as soon as you can!
