Highly resembles the new Ultraman armor, the unmasked head sculpt really makes the figure stand out

Feels that the peg/joints might break when playing

???????????????????????????????????

Ultraman was among the very first heroes that I knew growing up. I recall the mornings watching the show on local television. Yes, it was dubbed, but as a kid I didn’t care.

In case you didn’t know who or what Ultraman is, it is a Japanese tokusatsu science fiction television series that features a giant superhero protecting the earth agains alien invaders and giant monsters. Ultraman became so popular that it spawned a number of sequels, spin-offs and other Ultra-heroes over the years. The series was created and popularized by Eiji Tsuburaya and the first series aired at Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) from July 17, 1966 to April 9, 1967.

Back in 2011,Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi released a new Ultraman manga for this generation. It’s a continuation and a reimagination of some sort as Ultraman no longer turns into a giant superhero. It turns out after Ultraman left his host, Shin Hayata, his genes passed on to him and in turn passed on to his son, Shinjiro. Now that the world again is in danger, son, now dons the Ultraman armor (which kind of looks like a Japanese Iron Man armor) powered by his Ultraman genes. Now, Shinjiro battles the new threats trying to invade Earth as Ultraman just like his father before him.

This 2019, Netflix has released an animated adaptation of the manga series. It’s already out so you can start binge watching the series.

In 2014, SHFiguarts released this figure based off the manga and released two editions. The regular and the special version, which we are reviewing today. Basically, the only difference between the two is the unmasked head sculpt.
PACKAGING 9/10

???????????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????????

Unlike most SHFiguarts figure, this Ultraman Special Version’s packaging is mysterious. It doesn’t have the usual clear plastic cover that displays what’s in the box so you’ll have no idea what you’re getting like the number of accessories, replaceable hands, etc. The front just shows you an image from the manga while the back gives you a preview of the actual figure. Other than that, nothing else. With this sense of mystery, for me it gives more value to the packaging plus the front image makes it already highly displayable. You’ll never think of throwing a box as beautiful as this.

ACCESSORIES 9/10

???????????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????????

Having faith pays off as the Ultraman Special Ver comes with a LOT of accessories. It comes with 2 replaceable pair of hands, a left fist, his Ultraman beam and cutter effects, replaceable armor parts and of course, the unmasked head sculpt. It even has a special action base that has the Ultraman banner and the SSSP (Science Special Search Party) logo.

SCULPT AND PAINT 8/10

???????????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????????

Ultraman is a figure with basic color and designs and SHFiguarts, as always, was able to perfectly capture that. Ultraman is primarily a silver figure with red highlights and the red paint on this figure really stands out. Either you’ve read the manga or watched the anime, the attention to detail on this figure is on point.

ARTICULATION 8/10

???????????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????????

I’m not sure if this just because this figure is an older model but the articulation on this figure is stiff. I’m not saying that it’s not poseable, in fact, it’s highly playable and poseable just do it with extra care. I was actual scared when changing the hands and head as I fear that the peg would break. I already experienced breaking a peg of one of my figures, it’s really hard as these figures don’t come in cheap. If you’ve got light and sturdy hands then you shouldn’t have a problem with this figure.

OVERALL 8.5/10

???????????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????????

Ultraman is a popular toy line but some prefer the original Ultra Act figures. The Ultraman manga continues the legacy that Ultraman has started but some are saying that it’s just a Japanese Iron Man rip-off. To each his own, that’s why this figure might come off as an acquired taste to a collector. If you happen to love the manga or Netflix’s adaptation, then it’s worth getting this figure. Since this was released a few years back, you might have difficulty getting this figure or it may cost you more than the retail price. However, since the anime came out, pre-orders for Ultraman,
