Welcome back as we put another entry in our Toy Reviews section! Last time we brought you the Ultra Act: Ultraman and now we’re bringing you a figure coming from the popular anime Evangelion. Brought to us by Arigatoys, we take a look at the yellow-colored EVA Mark.09. Now let’s get straight to the review and test the limit and playability of this baby!

PACKAGING

The packaging is similar to Revoltech Yamaguchi’s current releases consisted of mostly white colors. With a first look at the box, you can already see the important parts included with the figurethe main EVA unit, extra hands, extra head, the scythe, and skull-filled base. The back side of the box shows images of the figure, including some action poses, items included and different features of the figure.

But what you don’t see are some extra stuff used for posing, stands, a ground effect and the ever handy Revo box where you can put those accessories so you might not lose them.

ACCESSORIES

The most noticeable accessory is the scythe, which is the main weapon of the unit. Some would argue that it should’ve included it’s cape. They compensate it by giving us three pairs of extra hands, in which the left hand is identical to the right one. All in all the figure has four pairs of swappable hands, which is very handy for awesome poses especially when holding the scythe. For a standard pose in your shelf, the coolest accessory useful in the package is the skull-filled base.

It includes a Revo box wherein you can place your extra hands and small parts of the figure. It comes with six pieces of stand items which can be interconnected depending on use.

SCULPT & PAINT

The Revoltech Yamaguchi line excels when it comes to sculpting and this figure is no exception. The EVA 09 is skinny and sulky looking, and the figure has great sculpt in it’s different parts that still makes the figure very posable and still contains good details in it. Although the pieces and sculpt are thin, this figure might be a bit fragile so be careful when posing and playing with it. Ultimately, the figure is made up of multiple parts which has good detail in it – even the back looks freakin’ good.

What I don’t like with the figure is the paint. The color schemes are great but we’re sure that they were really trying to get a glossy or shiny finish but it doesn’t really suit the figure very well especially when you have a close-up look on the figure. The paint has a ‘rubbery’ feel and makes the figure a bit gummy even though it doesn’t really affect the articulation that much (great job on that one). I kind of hate it when figures are coated this way instead of the color coming from the material or plastic in the first place. Because of this, you have to be careful not to scratch the figure because the paint is more prone to peel off — especially when Summer comes. Great color on the figure, has a lot of details but because of the paint some parts may not look so great up close.

Last note on sculpt is very interesting, and it can be seen in the pelvis area. It’s mostly made up of rubber. Which is actually brilliant since it still retains the sculpt and lessens the figure’s limit when it comes to poseability. The same can be said with the shoulder’s fins. I don’t know why they did that with the shoulder but it is totally understandable for the pelvis area. The inclusion of this rubber parts might be the culprit why we got this kind of paint in this figure.

ARTICULATION

Now we come to the part where we look into one of the figure’s core and where we test the figure’s articulation. The figure has a lot of small parts and with it comes lots of articulation. But, it doesn’t mean it has great poseability. But we definitely applaud what Revoltech did in order to make this figure articulated as much as they could given it’s lanky and skinny attributes. It still includes ball joints in the important places for articulation such as elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, etc.

Our favorite part of the articulation would be the abdomen. If you check the image below in which we disassembled the main parts, you can see that the abdomen or upper torso part has the most complex parts interconnected together. Because of the good job they did inside it, we are able to twist and turn the upper body and mimic the EVA 09’s actual poses. Although you can’t really bend it backwards.

We have really good articulation for the shoulders and arms, the fins have articulations and joints connected to the shoulders which doesn’t limit the poseability that much. When it comes to the hips and legs, it’s a different story. you can’t really straighten out the legs upto the feet, because well the EVA 09 should be that way right? It has some kind of awkward stance and it’s all good since it resembles the actual anime version. Check out some of the images below to see how we cruelly tested out the lower body’s articulation:

Another interesting thing to point out in articulation is the neck. Why? Because it can be pulled out and extend itself. A neat trick thanks to the wonderful engineering of the upper torso/abdomen. Oh, and see it’s eye? It’s a ball piece which you can insert into a socket from the head.

ENJOYABILITY

We’ve had a few issues with this figure and some of you might say this is a crappy toy. But it is not. The figure definitely has its worth especially on the things we’ve discussed above. The EVA 09 isn’t really some complex robot composed of many mechanical parts like a Gundam, but its sleek and a bit minimalist design is a cool one and is prominent with Evangelion designs. Revoltech Yamaguchi truly captures the anime version. even though one can say it lacks something.

The whole package offers you a great figure, wherein Revoltech compensates you with accessories that you may need, and an incredible design that some may look over. Plus it has a swappable head, need a headless bad-ass figure? You’ve got it here. Check out the rest of our image gallery below, and see how much fun we’ve had from this figure.
