All Star Batman, in its entirety so far, has been the most hardcore Batman experience and what continues to impress me with this comic is that Scott Snyder managed to make the same character feel different. And coming in to this second arc’s finale it seems Scott Snyder isn’t running out of steam anytime soon.
Though I’ve missed out on the previous issue, I was able to catch up quickly on what happened in the story. Scott Snyder wraps up this arc nicely with how the past 2 issues simply led up to this one and introduced Ra’s Al Ghul all while a rescue mission was happening. A lot of twists in Snyder fashion were present but one thing that stood out is how Batman’s fight with Ra’s Al Ghul played out because of how Snyder managed to subtly break the fourth wall as a climax. Jock continues to impress with his art here as well, bringing in some dynamic compositions with a lot of play with shadows that fit well with the story.
For the second story, Snyder finishes up the long arc spotlighting Duke in the midst of a Riddler puzzle. The whole arc that characterized Duke served well that ended on a high note thanks to Snyder’s choice of doing an ending that’s “thinking outside the box”. It keeps the reader thinking even after this issue closes. Francesco Francavilla’s art duties contributed a lot as well notably with his play on a limited color palette of blue and orange accompanied by the usual Batman blacks.
All Star Batman #9 is proof that this comic doesn’t seem to show any signs of letting up anytime soon. Scott Snyder gives a delightfully insane Batman experience no matter which artist he’s paired with and as this issue closed, one can’t help but be eager to see what happens next.
