What If MacGyver’s Gay?
Ang Pagkikipagsapalaran ni Mang Gayber #1 is created by Arvin Valenzuela and kicks-off his so-called love-letter to the iconic 1980s to 1990s television series MacGyver, but in the most twisted and absurd ways possible ever. This premier issue introduces all of the main characters whose characterizations are the blatant caricatures of our beloved MacGyver casts. For examples, Mang Gayber can be seen as a bisexual dude, while Peter Pandesal is a hundred percent gay, but “she” is the coordinator of the former’s missions. Abu Kanuto is your stereotypical type of the antagonist in some of the hilarious panel moments. And, Maysie Pon is definitely the caricature of the titular cast’s counterpart’s platonic interest.
Arvin dwells more on the main cast’s supposed resourcefulness, ingenuity, and even sexuality in the comedic way possible; then shifts lately to the story’s plot: rescuing a female hostage from a villain somewhere in Region 2, the Cagayan region, of all places. Paneling-wise, the pacing is moderately geared until the quasi-homage Indiana Jones take-down moments. Actually, despite its corniness, this initial issue alone is a decent read, though the ridiculousness and bizarreness are becoming the hallmarks of this series alone. Yes, sometimes his illustrations are both comedic and at times, awkwardly corny as well.
