The circle of life is a very mysterious thing; it’s a continuous cycle that no matter how much we try to understand it, we always learn something new about it. It’s constant yet inconsistent at the same time. We see it in different perspective and angle with every new information feed to us but in reality it hasn’t changed much since the dawn of time. It all boils down to ‘The stronger survives’, that’s the harsh reality to it…
Frédéric Brrémaud’s silent comic LOVE: The Tiger that was beautifully illustrated by Federico Bertolucci depicts the story of a tiger’s adventure as it hunts prey and tries to defend itself from other predators and animals out there in really quite violent scenes. Each panel was very detailed on what is occurring that you do not need the usual narrations you hear when watching the same scenes happening on a wild life documentary, like how sometimes despite not being taken down by one animal, another just suddenly comes in and get you. We are once again reminded that in the circle of life, it’s always the survival of the fittest.
The art had a The Jungle Book kind of feel to it that makes it easy to the eyes despite the nature’s violence that is taking place. The warm colors used were wonderful giving a more tropical feel to it than just the setting. Though there were panels where the animals give out cartoonish reactions, over all the art gave out a very realistic vibe to it.
LOVE: The Tiger is actually the first in a series of three graphic novels. Next is LOVE: The Fox, which will be followed by LOVE: The Lion.
