The Damned #1 cover

A demon named Eddie who can return from death in mere moments? Running a nightclub? A recipe brought to you by Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt and Bill Crabtree. How does this comic fare?

Cullen Bunn presents the reader with a concept. That being a demon named Eddie who comes back from death immediately. From there, Bunn continues rolling in with a noir story that captures the noir vibe usually presented in film and television. The problem is that all of this seems cliche at first but is averted by the ending of this 1st issue and the overall concept of including demons as well as the artwork.

Speaking of artwork, Brian Hurtt and Bill Crabtree provide an excellent contrast to the noir setting. Hurtt’s characters have this clean cartoon style while Crabtree supports these with some nice black and white palettes that transition to fully colored scenes.

Cullen Bunn has gotten a reputation for providing fun in stories and The Damned #1 is no exception. The mixing of concept and a noir set story is done well. The artwork by Hurtt and Crabtree provides an unexpectedly fun contrast to this noir presentation. Initially, I had a problem with how the story almost went to completely cliche territory but after reading the end of this 1st issue I’m now eager to see how the rest of this story unfolds in the coming issues.
