Batman-The-Merciless-1-1-600x922

Batman’s unwillingness to compromise his values has made it easy for his villains to wreck havoc in Gotham City. His inability to take a life has numerously caused the death of hundreds and thousands of Gothamites. Call it his weakness, but the Batman we grew up with shows justice through mercy. But the question is, can Batman break away from the mold? Yes, he can be merciless.

I’ve been raving about Peter Tomasi ever since he took writing duties for Batman and Robin (New 52). His ability to make the stories relatable to human experience is impressive. The same can be said in BATMAN: THE MERCILESS #1. Origin of the character might not have been his idea (I’m not entirely sure), but he made the story relatable to everyone.

Despite its great story, it had a loophole — Batman’s inability to determine a dead body. Although, I think I can live with that since Peter used it to deliver a great f&#@ing twist at the end. That gave me goosebumps.

There’s nothing much to talk about Francis Manapul’s artwork. Simply put, he’s one of the best in the business. The grittiness of his art emphasized the tragedy and the despair Batman had to go through.

I was expecting great stories from these tie-ins and this book exceeded my expectations. There are only a number of comic books that gave me goosebumps, this is definitely one of those. Personally, I would rate Batman: The Merciless #1 with six stars, but I don’t think it would reflect in the review site. But nonetheless, I really think that this book is worth reading. Grab a copy in your favorite LCS before you regret it.
