The best thing about independent comic creations is that the creators can do whatever they want, alongside with their top-of-the-line artistic executions. This is the case of Frank Cho‘s new independent comic series, SKYBOURNE #1, released by BOOM! Studios. As mentioned in the end of this comic, Skybourne is a fusion of Indiana Jones, Arthurian legends and James Bond. Indeed, we are introduced to two of three Skybourne siblings who possess incredible strength, steel-like armor skin and most importantly, immortality. Although unmentioned in the interiors, the biggest antagonist here already shows how powerful he is to challenge one of the immortals. And, Cho fulfills his promise a highly octane and exciting opening to make readers whet for more Skybourne to come (hopefully in the monthly basis for he is one heck of a perfectionist to begin with).

As always, Cho’s woman is sexy, strong and, well, voluptuous. But the creator does not give in to any criticisms regarding how he portrays ladies in graphic narratives. As long as he is consistent of presenting powerful-minded women without being objectifying is already sufficient for yours truly. Skybourne #1 already proves Frank’s point on how his femme fatale can be both empowering and human at the same time. I can’t wait how she will fare in next chapter/issue.
Together with the creator-extraordinaire is Marcio Menyz, who colors Cho’s detailed pencils to nigh perfection. I believe Menyz is the perfect colorist for Frank for the former knows almost exactly how to illuminate Cho’s intricate, painstaking and clean illustrations, including the cover arts. Even the artist’s trademark crosshatches are colored to perfection, which is not an easy task to do so. I can wait no further  for Menyz’s brilliant colors.
Skybourne #1 is an excellent start for Frank Cho’s new creation since his Liberty Meadows run. All of his trademark illustrations are here, most especially his femme fatale. Characterization is obviously lacking here for the of a pulsating and exciting start. Naturally, that perceive weakness may come to light in the succeeding chapters if that’s the case with the creative force. Some may argue that some of the tropes inside are anything but novel; yet Cho at least puts some freshness in the old genres by emphasizing more on action and fast-pacing storytelling over characterization and exposition to make this initial issue an exciting and reinvigorating read. In short, Frank Cho is definitely on his top of his game right now.
