Justice League #52 marks the end of The New 52 – Justice League run, and this finale explains why and how Lex Luthor ascended to become Metropolis’s newest “Man of Steel”. It would be nice if this issue comes out immediately after Justice League #50, Superman #52 and DC Universe Rebirth #1 because Justice League #52 feels so anti-climatic already, if not a denouement, to the aftermath of the hyped The New 52 Death of Superman event brouhaha. First, the story itself is so forced to read. It is virtually predictable to discern since Lex Luthor himself is incredibly a very predictable super-villain in the entire New 52 run, unlike the pre-Flashpoint counterpart(s). Second, the story revolves on his ego to become a “better man” for his living relative’s sake. Again, the façade of being a superhero mirrors Lex’s narcissistic attitude to do better than anyone else, including the recent departed greatest protector. And third, I’m so disappointed that the supposed tougher-than-nails, morally principled and ethically upright Clark Kent’s Editor-in-chief goes down of becoming a pragmatic-survivalist fellow, especially to the newly crowned “protector” of Metropolis. I am no Superman fan, but Perry White is the paragon of integrity and uncompromising guardian of journalism in the superhero genre. And this Justice League finale almost shatters that monolithic imagery to smithereens just of Lex’s “special” skill. If there are some consolations here, Lex’s ascendance to the top is no bed of roses, so to speak. As shown in the pages of Action Comics, his authority is already challenged by the pre-Flashpoint Superman, and obviously, the entire Justice League team is still skeptical to his motives.

Also, Dan Jurgens is the writer for this ultimatum chapter. As expected, his brand of writing is formulaic to suit the timetable of comic release, resulting a very predictable and almost uninspiring writing. Take note, this one is decent though lack of greatness or being thought-provoking. Personally, this explanatory issue is more of homage to the 1990s artistry over narrative paradigm that prevailed in the comic industry. The art is generally very detailed. The Metropolis skyline is actually given consideration, even the interiors of the buildings. The facial expressions are done adequately, including Lex’s snobbish attitude to the Justice League and his inner monologue. And, his new costume is admittedly looked more functional and proportionally drawn than his pre-Flashpoint counterpart.  In this regards, Tom Grummett, Danny Miki, Mark Morales, Scott Hanna and Gabe Eltaeb should be commended for their respective excellent artistic deliveries.

Justice League 52 01

Justice League #52 answers how, albeit lately, Superman’s greatest archrival’s ascendency as Metropolis’s protector. The premise could have been interesting if not for the usual patented storytelling of longtime Superman writer Dan Jurgens. If he writes this in the 1990s, this story could be “shocking”, but let’s face it, comic book readers nowadays are more sophisticated than ever. It happens Dan can beat the deadlines. And, the artists behind this issue are the true heroes here. If only Doctor Manhattan can reverse this one….
