Without further ado, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ Kill Or Be Killed #1 starts off WITH THE BANG!
The story starts with a killing spree and ends with an inevitable crossing of the Rubicon. It almost looks a start of the recent Deadpool movie, even the narrator is the protagonist himself, talking to the readers on how he’s about to enjoy his newfound role and then shifts on the root of his current existence. But, that’s where the similarities between Deadpool and this new noir opus end. The rest is definitely unexpected though essentially not novel at all. What’s matter most here is Ed puts freshness on the deal with the malevolent trope. I can’t wait if this one turns another Lovecraft inspired work or otherwise. It’s basically a postmodern twist of realism and a tinge of supernatural. We’ll see after this riveting premier issue.
Sean’s art is undoubtedly superb, only clearer than his previous works, including the recent magnus opus The Fade Out. The colors only match Sean’s exquisite illustrations and these only add to the already suspenseful and dreadful tone between rationality and the unknown.
Another treat here is the additional features like an historical essay and an engaging newsletter to bout. Simply put, great start with intellectually stimulating pop culture historical essay and a snappy letter board make this premier issue THE WINNER!
Unlike among others, Ed and Sean never rest their creative genius laurels yet; and KILL OR BE KILLED #1 is the proof. Just remember, be VERY CAREFUL of what you wish for.
