Violent Love Vol. 1 cover

All’s fair in love and war. And fair seems like an understatement for VIOLENT LOVE‘s first volume as readers are in for an enjoyable story of love and revenge by Frank J. Barbiere and Victor Santos.

Barbiere crafts a story focusing on a girl named Daisy as she goes from a struggling waitress to a hardened young girl struggling to use a gun right. The story itself is neatly done and one might say it could play well as a movie but the real point of interest is how Barbiere writes Daisy’s personal journey as the plot moves forward. Reading every page feels personal even as it gets violent and more characters are introduced. My only real gripe was how Barbiere occasionally felt the need to remind how Daisy was a damaged character despite how the story already told a lot without spoonfeeding information.

Victor Santos’ art after just a few pages immediately strikes as a combination of Darwyn Cooke’s character style and Lynn Varley’s gritty style when a panel is heavily inked. Santos, of course, has a lot to bring to the table giving Barbiere’s story a great sense of violence and love with his timed dynamic shots, use of pastel colors for calm or steady moments, and the use of strong colors for tension.

Violent Love Vol. 1 delivers an enjoyable comic filled with a generous amount of danger thanks to Frank J. Barbiere’s delivery of main character development and Victor Santos’ well timed artistic cues. Though there’s already an endpoint for this comic, it warrants the reader to stick around for the next volume.
