TOYCON PH 2014 Highlights: Day 1 – Dealers’ Day And Play Night Party!

ToyCon season has arrived yet again, and it’s that time of the year where geeks and toy afficionados of all sizes gather around for a weekend filled with fun, excitement and surprises. This year, the organizers have promised that the said event’s 13th iteration will be the biggest yet. Truth be told, they made true to their word, which is a testament to the impact ToyCon has brought throughout the years. It is also worthy of note as to how it evolved from a simple event about toys and cosplay, to a grand amalgamation of everything that’s pop culture.

ToyCon’s Day 1 opened on a peculiar, yet positive note, as crowds started queuing up before and after the gates have opened – an unusual feat, considering that the opener’s often allotted for dealers and consumers alike.

Some local toy stores and sellers have set shop on the floor, offering sweet deals, rare finds, and discounts to the visitors.

Special spots were featured in the hall as well. Display spots for Batman 75 and Rurouni Kenshin were opened for the visitors’ perusal.

But that was just the appetizer. Later that evening, the organizers held a mini-concert party for the guests and spectators to enjoy. Dubbed as Play Night Party, it featured performances from indie bands and known personalities alike. It was hosted by model/toy collector Carlo Patrick Torres, and fashion blogger Monica Luis.

Things kicked off with a feel good performance from one of the country’s iconic bands, Itchyworms. After their stage time, they entertained a few photo ops with a couple of fans and cosplayers.

Later on, local bands such as Ikuzo Iwa, Surface Tension, and crowd favorite Asterysk took it to the show floor and peppered the air with their amazing renditions of known Jpop/Anime hits, much to the amusement of the audience.

DJ SkyJon also graced ToyCon 2014 and dazzled everyone with his wide repertoire of house music and EDMs. The beats and the rhythmic tunes prompted some of the spectators(and even the hosts) to dance along.

But perhaps the main highlight of the night would be the appearance of Metro’s no. 1 all-girl group, the Mocha Girls. They brought their unique brand of music and dance to the show floor, which elicited a lot of applause and warm feedback from the crowd.

It was then followed by a quick awarding of the night’s Play King & Queen, plus a couple of announcements, bringing the record-breaking Day 1 to a close.
