Royal Revolt 2

The real MINIONS.

Tower defense has definitely grown as a genre itself. It can no longer be considered a detached piece of Warcraft’s Defense of the Ancients legend and other mods where DOTA is mechanically hinged upon. The play style, an intelligent mix of troop and resource management, fits well in today’s gaming culture which focuses on mobile and tablet devices. While most tower defense games stop and follow the same formulae of its successful brethren, titles like Royal Revolt 2 looks to open the floodgates of innovation of a primitive, almost linear, and relatively new genre of video games.

The game is shortlisted on Google Play’s Editor’s Choice section of free-to-download mobile games. While Google’s team of in-house reviewers and ‘editors’ often fall short with their app diagnosis, the recommendation that Royal Revolt 2 has received on the Play Store is dead-eye accurate. Yes. Royal Revolt 2 manages to rebel against a plethora of mediocre tower defense games out there, and we’re positive that it could set the right benchmarks for the genre.

Royal Revolt 2 is about conquest – the theme which the game grounds itself may sound overused and scratched on the surface but trust us, the medieval setting is perfect for a tower defense game. You control a king (who you’re given freedom to name after completing a set of tutorials) who commands a large, endless supply of shock troopers and mystic creatures. Your goal is to raid and pillage nearby kingdoms maintained by other players. To do that, your king, with the help of his armed minions, enters simple mazes nestling with barricades, arrow towers, and spikes placed by the opposition. This forbids the player’s army from easily demolishing a castle gate owned by the competing offline player.

The leaderboard section of the game enables the player to select which castle to raid. Online players cannot be engaged. Offline players can be targeted anytime, exhausting their stockpiled collection of gold and other valuables against merciless conquerors.

This is where defense plays a pivotal role. A charging army can be easily thwarted by upgrading defense structures like the arrow tower and later if all the conditions have been properly met, new buildings can be unlocked. Aggressive players will also have to deal with minutely dispatched troops sent by the defense. Much like DOTA, the defending castle sends a fixed number of minions that can help stymie invading forces. The intervals, when troops are slung into war, can be upgraded, keeping encounters balanced and closely strategic.

Royal Revolt 2.1

From the ground up

Royal Revolt borrows some elements from Civilization and the Sim franchise. Acting as the king’s de facto war general, players will spend much of their time hoarding gold and keeping their castle fortified and flowing with essential resources like food. By the way, battles against offline player consume food. Building a farm supplies the player’s kingdom with food, keeping troop morale (and stomach satisfaction) in easy check. Taverns reload your kingdom’s supply of gold needed to fund upgrades of basic land and defense structures and improve the king’s unique set of magic skills and army slots.

A dungeon is unlocked later on. Dungeons are connected with each other and after completing one, the player is rewarded with gold and other special rewards special to that area. Be warned though that dungeons get increasingly difficult soon as the player progresses deep underground.

While gold can be picked up almost anywhere, gems, on the other hand, provide the essential balance to the game’s resource management mechanics. Gems can be used to resurrect your fallen king in battle, magically finish structure and troop upgrades, clear out paths required to build more arrow towers, and much more.

Gems are readily available as in-app purchases, which can easily turn the tides of battle into the favor of paying customers. This, by far, is the only biggest complaint that I have for the game and the only recognizable pitfall detriment to the game’s progress for freeloaders like myself. Though unnecessary, the pay-to-win (P2W) model of the game distracts Royal Revolt 2 from achieving kingly status, which is sad because the game is craftily-enjoyable when played in long stretches.

Crowning ceremony

Royal Revolt 2 is a majestic entry into the tower defense genre. It’s got potential to easily dethrone other games in terms of membership and popularity, but the unfair in-app unlockables remain unfair and breaks the game open early for premium players. Nonetheless, this sequel is a welcome addition that pushes itself away from a haystack of notoriously bad tower defense games that do nothing but imitate several of the genre’s predecessors.

The game deserves a crown made of platinum and robe made of fine silk!

The owner of tha game is not capable to grantee equally the same conditions to all the players discriminating either by region or by platform without specifying in advance.

Therefore, selected gamer will be soon left without videos to boost various items with an enormous disadvantage from the others.
