New Game Releases for the Week of September 29-October 5, 2014: SHADOW OF MORDOR, SUPER SMASH BROS. 3DS

One good thing about the “-ber” months, at least for local gamers here, is the fact that this is usually the time when the big-budgeted AAA releases—and not to mention lesser-known titles that are nonetheless still appreciated by a niche, but devoted, devoted fanbase—begin popping up. And boy, oh boy, does this week not disappoint! Here are two of the most-anticipated releases for this gaming week of September!

Shadow of Mordor

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Developer: Monolith Studios

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Early buzz for this one says that it’s supposed to be good, but not one critic ever expected it to be great! Cribbing stylistic gameplay cues from the Assassin’s Creed and Batman: Arkham games, its open-world combat is anchored by relentless AI enemies in the form of the “Nemesis” system. All major reviews indicate that Mordor deserves its next-gen stature, but for those of us who still rock our musty last-gen systems, don’t fret! The game will be slated to be released on November on both PS3 and Xbox 360!

super smash bros 3ds

Super Smash Bros.3DS

Developer: Sora Ltd., Bandai Namco

Publisher: Nintendo

Platforms: Nintendo 3DS

So now, it has come to this: one of modern-day Nintendo’s flagship fighting franchise is now available on portable form. And wouldn’t you know it, it’s just as fun as its previous console counterparts! Boasting a nifty cel-shaded art style that calls to mind that other fighting game franchise from the ‘90s (read: Street Fighter IV), it’s sure to be a must-purchase for every content-starved 3DS owner out there! Just don’t forget to stretch your thumbs every once in a while, of course.

And here are the rest of the releases for this week:
