Writing a narrative, especially of actual accounts, can be a challenge because there’s weighing the different sides of the individuals that were a part of it, and let’s not forget, the “true” part where the facts echo the whole tale.

Based on actual events, Spotlight follows the Boston Globe’s infamous team assigned to investigate a Catholic Church Priest, John Geoghan, who was accused of child molestation.

For a controversial topic, the filmmakers didn’t focus on the dramatization of the events. Rather, it’s about the journalists as the characters, the work they do and their strong-willed personalities.

The ‘true-to-life’ aspect makes the film even more compelling because of the voices who are a part of it. The film shows the horrific nature of these abuses, and it doesn’t sugarcoat the profane language. That the scandal became a life-changing phenomena is what makes the writing thought-provoking.

One of the things I like is how the director/writer Tom McCarthy portrays the journalists and the victims as similar in importance. The characters lend their time and allows the filmmakers to tell the their story, and seeing their expressions brings that ambiguous yet haunting impact that makes you care about each and every one of them.

The Spotlight team aren’t just professionals: their caring dynamic makes them a family and allows the audience to partake in the filial connection. The bits in their daily lives, like Matt Caroll’s fatherly instinct when he puts a message on the fridge, adds more depth to the character.

Having an exceptional ensemble is the key. Cast members Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Stanley Tucci, Brian D’Arcy James, Liev Schreiber and John Slattery all carried the entire film from start to finish: their grounded take on the characters makes it work, and the fact that they show the emotional depth of how much the issue has affected them makes it real. Additionally, the sense of responsibility that they handled with care makes us, the audience, connect with them.

Spotlight may not be your typical crowd-pleasing film. It’s a raw and honest way of telling a true story and it teaches us to be aware of issues that surround our society and to not be afraid and speak out.
