Eddie Garcia in Jun Lana’s “Bwakaw”

It’s been two years since director Jun Robles Lana’s film Bwakaw was shown in the Philippines but it still receives recognition outside the country up to now.

Yesterday Percival Intalan, partner of Lana, posted on his Facebook account that Bwakaw won the Best Script award in the 14th Pyongyang International Film Festival held last September in North Korea.

“Go BWAKAW…. in North Korea!!! A story about a gay man, imagine that? So proud of my husband Jun Robles Lana!!” Intalan said on his Facebook.

The Pyongyang International Film Festival (PIFF) is an urbane event  for a state known to filter its nation from any outside (particularly Western) influence. The said film festival happens every two years in the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang.

Bwakaw is the sole PH nominee in PIFF. It is about a gay senior, played by Eddie Garcia, finding happiness in the companionship of a stray dog named Bwakaw.

The film is also the official Oscar entry to Best Foreign Language Film category in 2012.
