Flipgeeks’ 2014 MOVIE GUIDE – Philippines

A geek’s guide to 2014’s must-see movies — Looking forward to watching awesome movies this year? Would you like to know the upcoming movies that you probably haven’t heard of? Well, this list’s just for you! Below you’ll find movies that will be shown here in the Philippines together with their respective dates this 2014. The movies that you’ll read about here are handpicked from the numerous lists that our friends from the movie distribution business in order to cater to the geek audience. The list contains movies from genres such as Horror, Sci-Fi, Drama, Adventure, Fantasy, Comedy and more. Don’t be surprised if you see some non-geeky or non-comicbook movies in the list, because our team of movie-lovers would like you guys to explore other genres as well.

The list may change and more items could be added in the future. But, let this be your 2014 MOVIE GUIDE and we’ll also make sure to update the items especially when it comes to release dates and reviews. Enjoy!!!

Jan 15 – GRUDGE MATCH

Jan 22 – THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty is a story of a daydreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter (Ben Stiller) takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.  Sean Penn, Shirley McClaine and Kathryn Hahn joins Stiller in this awe-inspiring journey of self-discovery. Feb 5 – ROBOCOP

In Robocop, when Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees its chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice. Feb 6 – THE LEGO MOVIE

The first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO® adventure which will incorporate some of the LEGO world’s most popular figures while introducing several new characters, inviting fans who have enjoyed the brand’s innovative toys and hugely popular video games for generations to experience their visually unique LEGO world as never seen before. Feb 12 – THE MONUMENTS MEN

George Clooney directs and stars in the action thriller “The Monuments Men” set at the backdrop of World War II  based on the bestselling non-fiction book “The Monuments Men” by Robert Edsel with Bret Witter about an unlikely group of men tasked to retrieve highly regarded art masterpieces stolen by Hitler across the globe.  Clooney pooled an impressive cast that includes Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban and Dmitri Leonidas. Mar 6 – MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN

In “Mr. Peabody and Sherman”, Mr. Peabody, the world’s smartest talking dog, has invented a time machine he calls the WABAC, which enables Peabody and his adopted human son Sherman to witness world-changing events first hand. Mar 6 – 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

Mar 14 – NEED FOR SPEED

Need for Speed” marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing. Mar 21 – MUPPETS MOST WANTED

The sequel takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine – the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit – and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. Mar 26 –  CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” returns Chris Evans as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America, along with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. In addition, film icon Robert Redford has joined the all-star cast as Agent Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.  (from Walt Disney Studios). Apr 2 – NOAH

Apr 9 – RIO 2

Rio 2” continues the grandeur of adventure into the heart of the Amazon as we see Blu and Jewel raise their children while unexpectedly meeting relatives in the wild and dodging dangers. Apr 19 – THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

The Grand Budapest Hotel” recounts the adventures of Gustave H., a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The movie is directed by Wes Anderson and stars a grand coup of a cast including Ralph Fiennes, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jude Law, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Lea Seydoux, Tilda Swinton and Owen Wilson. (from 20th century Fox)

Apr 30 – THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

May 15 – GODZILLA

May 21 – X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”  The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future. (from 20th century Fox). May 28 – MALEFICENT

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. Jun 11 – HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

How To Train Your Dragon 2” comes back after five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and Vikings on the island of Berk.  While Hiccup and Toothless continue to fly away in unknown territories,  they soon encounter a fearsome rider who is building an army of beasts by trapping dragons that will again test their strength and wits to safeguard the peace between man and dragons. (from 20th century Fox). Jun 11 – BLENDED

Jul 2 – DELIVER US FROM EVIL

New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. Jul 10 – DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Directed by Matt Reeves, ““Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is set 15 years later after “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” previously starred in by James Franco. In “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. Jun 18 – 22 JUMP STREET

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. Aug 13 – PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE

Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world famous air racer Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. Sep 18 – THE MAZE RUNNER

Non-stop thrills and chills await in “The Maze Runner,” based on the first book of the best selling trilogy by James Dashner.  The movie stars Dylan O’Brien as the main protagonist Thomas, brought to a dystopian world where the only memory remains is his name, Thomas along with the rest of other young adults thrive to survive in this world of maze known as the Glade. (from 20th century Fox)

Oct 1 – THE EQUALIZER

Nov 7 –  BIG HERO 6

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Big Hero 6,” an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion – a robot named Baymax – Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Dec 3 – LIVE BY NIGHT

Dec 17 – THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN

The final film in an epic Trilogy adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings.”  (from Warner Bros. Pictures)

Jan (2015) – INTO THE WOODS

Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.  (from Walt Disney Studios)

(Tentative Date) – DRAGON NEST: RISE OF THE BLACK DRAGON

The movie is the first part of the “Dragon Nest” trilogy set 50 years ago (from real time in game) when a black dragon appeared in the once peaceful land of Altera.  Under the order of the King, the young Geraint, Argenta, Velskud and other legendary heroes assembled various forces to form the Dragon Slaying Alliance. This incident was widely referred as the First Dragon Invasion by the generations to come. (from Axinite Digicinema)

(Tentative Date) – TOWER OF THE DEAD

“28 Days Later” meets “Die Hard” in the horror apocalyptic thriller “Tower of the Dead” helmed by filmmaker Ross Boyask.   In “Tower of the Dead,” a group of highly trained armed response team is tasked with breaching a fortified tower block and interrogate a notorious arms dealer in order to capture a dirty bomb terror suspect.  (from Axinite Digicinema)

(Tentative Date) – KIDNAPPING FREDDY HEINEKEN

Kidnapping Freddy Heineken” trails the real story behind the abduction of one of the wealthiest man of his time.  Based on true accounts, the film’s star-studded cast is headed by Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins in the title role.  The movie also stars Jim Sturgess, Sam Worthington and Ryan Kwanten.  In this heist movie set in 1984, four childhood friends decided to pull off what would later be called “the crime of the century.”  The movie brings us inside within the planning, execution, rousing aftermath and ultimate downfall of the kidnappers of beer tycoon Alfred “Freddy” Heineken, which resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for an individual.  (from Axinite Digicinema)
