THE DIALOGUE: Firing The Birdshot with Mikhail Red and Mary Joy Apostol

In hindsight, one can surmise that our local film scene is filled with sophisticated female protagonists known for their affinity for glamour, beauty, and style.

Marie Joy Apostol begs to differ.

Unlike most stars of her age, she compares herself to any other teenager with her timid smile and delicate frame. However, what sets her apart is her great potential as an actress; Moreso, the bravery to play a role that demands potent acting discipline. Truth be told, she was born to walk the red carpet and be hailed as one of the greats someday.

FlipGeeks was fortunate to talk to Marie Joy Apostol, as we discuss her role, her preparation for Birdshot, and the next step in her blossoming career.

FG: Birdshot is your first major acting stint. How does it feel working with Direk Mikhail and the team?

(I feel super blessed since I’ve had the opportunity to work with one of the youngest and best directors of this era. I am also quite happy working with Mik and the rest of the cast. Our tapings are often filled with laughter.)

How would you describe your character? Do you share the same traits?

Maya’s character is about young girl po na independent po siya kasi lumaki siya na yung father lang niya kasama niya and strong person din po siya kasi syempre po nakaya din po niyang mag-isa or lumaki kahit father lang po niya kasama niya. And syempre may soft side din po si Maya like super love po niya yung dog niya and I think yung soft side din po nila Maya yung same traits namin kasi super dog lover din po ako. (Maya is an independent character who became strong in part to living with just her father, as well as learning how to rely on herself. She also has a soft side, which is apparent with her love for her dog, which is a trait I think I’m sharing with her.)

Aside from acting workshops, Apostol also has to learn proper gun handling and petting dogs.

Aside from acting workshops, Apostol also had to learn proper gun handling and taming dogs.

Aside from workshops, did you take any specific training for the film, since your character is seemingly adept with rifles?

Yes po aside sa workshops and script reading ganun po nag-training din po ako with the dog kasi they want din po na maging comfortable ako with the dog and dahil po dun parang mas maging natural po yung mga scene na kasama po si Bala and tinuruan din po nila ako pano po hawakan yung gun.  (Yes, aside from workshops and script readings, I was trained to be comfortable with dogs so that my bond with the canine character Bala will become natural in preparation for our scenes together. In addition, they have also trained me to handle rifles.)

What roles would you like to take next? What’s next for Mary Joy?

Sa ngayon po hindi ko pa po alam pero kung sakali naman po na meron willing naman po akong gawin or pag-aralan yung mabibigay po saking project.  (I have no idea what may lie next, but I’ll be willing to take any role as long as the opportunity comes and if I’ll be given the chance to study the project.)
